Phytotherapeutic preparations containing kelp (organic iodine) were singled out by me in connection with the need to be prescribed by an endocrinologist after assessing the function of the thyroid gland by the level of thyroid-stimulating hormones. The opinions of endocrinologists and physicians of other specialties are divided on the need and even the possibility of prescribing iodine-containing drugs in patients with hyperthyroidism. This is due to the fact that some doctors believe that with an increase in the level of thyroid hormones, which occurs with hyperthyroidism, iodine-containing foods can aggravate the disease due to the fact that iodine is used to synthesize these hormones. At the same time, other doctors believe that organic (found in food) and inorganic iodine behave differently in the body. In particular, organic iodine is absorbed exactly as much as the body needs.
Also, the dietary supplements endonorm and endocrinol include an extract of the white cinquefoil root, and the substance albinin contained in it affects the production of the anterior pituitary gland of thyroid-stimulating hormone, which, by a feedback mechanism, inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones. But serious scientific studies of these drugs have not been conducted, therefore medicinal properties cinquefoil white is questioned by most endocrinologists.
In this article, I present the treatment algorithms used at the Department of Phytotherapy of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, which are given in the book “Phytotherapy. Traditions of Russian herbalism» authors Korsun V.F., Korsun E.V. Once again, I repeat that any phytotherapeutic treatment can even harm if taken not according to indications and uncontrollably.

Phytotherapeutist Akimova N.S.
Iodine containing herbs are prescribed for diseases of the thyroid gland: some of these herbs are used for goiter with thyrotoxicosis (increased function of the thyroid gland), others - for goiter with hypothyroidism (decreased function), others - for tumor diseases of the thyroid gland . So I undertook a study in order to understand what is the difference between herbs containing iodine for thyroid. It turned out that for therapeutic use iodine-containing plant, it is important in which chemical compound the iodine contained in it is located. Most iodine-containing plants are rich in potassium and sodium iodides, while another interesting group of plants contains iodine in the form of a complex compound called diiodotyrosine.
Herbal Thyroid Treatment
For the therapeutic use of an iodine-containing plant, it is important in which particular chemical compound the iodine contained in it is located.
Let's schematically trace the stages of the synthesis of thyroid hormones - thyroid (from lat. thyreo - thyroid gland) hormones. First, a thyroid cell (thyrocyte) captures from the blood the iodide ion in it, which is formed during the dissociation of potassium or sodium iodide, that is, those substances that are found in most iodine-containing plants. Then the thyrocyte takes the thyroglobulin protein from the colloid and attaches one iodine atom to the amino acid of this protein tyrosine, resulting in monoiodine-tyrosine (mono means one). Further, the second atom of iodine “attaches” to monoiodotyrosine and diiodotyrosine is obtained (di means two). Thus, diiodotyrosine, contained in some plants, is a substance that is obtained at the second stage of hormonal synthesis in the thyroid gland.
Now the “chemical” difference between iodine-containing herbs becomes clear: some of them contain iodide, the raw material for the synthesis of thyroid hormones, while others contain diiodothyrosine, an intermediate product of hormonal synthesis, so to speak, a semi-finished product.
Being a prehormone, diiodothyrosine does not have hormonal activity. However, as soon as two molecules of diiodothyrosine unite, the thyroid hormone thyroxine (or tetraiodothyronine) is formed. And when one molecule of diiodotyrosine is combined with one molecule of monoiodine-tyrosine, triiodothyronine is obtained, which is 4 times more active than thyroxine.
Thus, the main difference between iodine-containing herbs is in what chemical form the iodine is contained in the plant.
Naturally, they have different effects. The effects of exposure to iodides have been studied quite well. Entering the body in large quantities exceeding the daily requirement for iodine, potassium and sodium iodides block the organization of iodine, that is, its attachment to the amino acid tyrosine and, accordingly, the formation of thyroid hormones. In addition, excess amounts of iodide reduce the blood supply to the thyroid gland. This effect, bearing the names of Wolf and Chaikov, has long been used to herbal thyroid treatment.
However, such an action of iodides is temporary, transient, non-permanent. Over time, thyrotoxicosis again takes its toll. Moreover, long-term administration of iodides in autoimmune diseases can provoke an aggravation of their course. And some authors are even inclined to assert that long-term use of drugs containing iodides provokes malignant degeneration in the thyroid tissue.
Therefore, at present, the use of iodides is limited to two cases. The first case is the treatment of endemic goiter (this is when there is little iodine in water and food). Here, iodides are used, as they say, in full force and are a generally recognized remedy. The industry produces special preparations for the treatment of the thyroid gland with radioactive iodine, which contain potassium iodide. Some of them are called “Iodide-100” or “Iodide-200”, “Iodomarin”.
The second case is Lugol's drops in milk for a rapid decrease in the function of the thyroid gland before surgery for goiter with thyrotoxicosis.
There is a third indication for iodides in very small doses. This is fibrocystic mastopathy and cysts in the thyroid gland. The method is not supported by all doctors; usually it is used by homeopaths. The compound diiodotyrosine does not have a pronounced hormonal activity, it inhibits the production of a hormone that activates the thyroid gland.
If you understand in more detail, it turns out that diiodotyrosine is preferable, since it is more quickly absorbed by the thyroid gland. This happens despite the fact that in the thyroid gland it is still “taken apart for spare parts” - iodine and tyrosine, and does not go for synthesis as a whole.
Thyroid cancer treatment
In thyroid cancer, those herbs that act not on thyrocytes (thyroid cells), but on the cells of the immune system that are present in the gland and are responsible for the processes of surveillance and tissue regulation, are effective. Such plants include common cocklebur, knotted boletus and small duckweed. In all likelihood, iodine in the composition of these plants plays the role of a conductor, bringing immunoregulatory substances to the site of action - to the thyroid gland.
Cocklebur and nightweed belong to the category poisonous plants. I want to draw the attention of readers to the fact that a plant is not a factory for the production of a pure product, and therefore each iodine-containing plant contains various iodine compounds. So, for example, lichens (cetraria, parmelia), in addition to diiodotyrosine, contain a significant amount of iodides. That's why I use the expression "predominant content."
To harmonize immune system inside the thyroid gland, low doses of cocklebur or boletus are sufficient, and more tangible doses of these plants are needed to obtain an antitumor effect.
To compile this table from reference books and books on herbs, I took all the known options for fees and prescriptions recommended for the treatment of the thyroid gland with herbs, and divided them into two large groups:
- for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis,
- for the treatment of hypothyroidism .
- After that, I placed in two columns, in accordance with these groups, iodine-containing herbs included in the recipes I found. As a result, in the column "Thyrotoxicosis" there were plants containing mainly iodides, and in the column "Hypothyroidism" there were herbs with high level diiodotyrosine in the composition.
- The third column, which I called "Endemic goiter", includes those herbs that contain iodides, and those in which iodine is found mainly in the composition of diiodotyrosine. This is understandable: if there is a deficiency of iodine in water and food, then what difference does it make in what form it enters the body. This is the reason for such "illegibility" of endemic goiter in relation to iodine-containing plants.
- In the fourth column were placed herbs that have a positive effect on thyroid cancer.
Let me remind you that herbs were included in one column or another not at my whim, but based on popular experience and some author compositions.
The table is very easy to use. To select a plant for the treatment of thyrotoxicosis, look in column I. Hypothyroidism requires the appointment of a plant from the column II.
Most of the plants, as we have already said, are in column III (for the treatment of endemic goiter), which contains almost all iodine-containing plants. Here it is necessary to pay attention that endemic goiter may be with normal function, and may be with hypothyroidism. Therefore, here too, one must choose carefully.
Finally, column IV consists of herbs used in thyroid cancer. It is indicated in brackets that herbs contain immunomodulatory substances. It must be said that many other plants from the other three columns also contain immunomodulatory substances, however, only plants from column IV show antitumor properties in thyroid cancer.
Not all herbs used in treatment of thyroid diseases contain iodine. This is very important, especially if we remember that iodides in thyrotoxicosis are effective only in the initial phase of treatment, as well as the negative effect of iodine on the course of autoimmune diseases. By the way, in herbs for thyroid cancer treatment, as a rule, consisting of 7-10 herbs, iodine-containing are at most 2-3 plants.
An analysis of the formulation of such collections showed that iodine-free herbs used to treat the thyroid gland can be divided into three groups:
- Herbs that affect hormonal regulation (hormone-regulatory).
- Herbs affecting the cause and mechanism of the development of the disease (etiological and pathogenetic).
- Herbs that eliminate certain symptoms of the disease (symptomatic).
According to their effect on the thyroid gland, hormone-regulatory herbs can be divided into stimulating and depressing.
Stimulating herbs forthyroid treatment without surgery
Stimulating herbs needed for hypothyroidism. These herbs, as a rule, are non-specific: they simultaneously stimulate many endocrine glands in our body, and not just the thyroid gland. Such herbs include adaptogen plants: ginseng, eleutherococcus prickly, high lure, Chinese magnolia vine, Manchurian aralia, safro-like leuzea. And, of course, plants of the family Crassulaceae (stonecrop): stonecrop pink and caustic, various botanical species of Rhodiola. In addition to the well-known Rhodiola rosea (golden root), it is necessary to keep in mind the four-part Rhodiola (for the color and shape of the root, this plant is popularly called the red brush). The properties of the red brush, which grows in Siberia, in the Altai Mountains, largely duplicate the properties of the golden root, but there are differences. In particular, it is believed that the red brush is especially good for hypothyroidism, menstrual dysfunction, and has an antitumor effect.
Herbs containing bitterness also have stimulating properties. By the way, such iodine-containing herbs as the three-leaf watch and Icelandic cetraria (Icelandic moss) are excellent tonics. If you do not touch iodine-containing plants, then it is impossible to ignore the unfortunate chub. There are many botanical species of gentian: blue-flowered, three-flowered, yellow, dove, seven-parted, cold, bearded (grows in Siberia), large-leaved and a number of others. Almost all of them can be used for non-specific stimulation of the body in general and the thyroid gland in particular.
Bitterness is also found in calamus marsh, common yarrow, bitter wormwood, centaur centaury. In addition, an increase in thyroid function can occur under the influence of two such dissimilar plants as mistletoe and mountain arnica.
Thyroid diseases are one of the most common pathologies today. There are several varieties of this kind of disease. More patients are turning to natural treatments folk remedies, which is due to the soft action and safety.
What are diseases
There are several types of thyroid disease. Each of them is characterized by a deviation from the normal functioning of the body. Hyperthyroidism occurs due to increased functional activity. Another form of the disease (hypothyroidism) is associated with insufficient production of thyroid-stimulating hormones. In the first case, the organ often increases in size, nodular formations may appear. In addition, there is also an autoimmune form of the disease. Violations in the work of the body occur due to the destruction of tissues, which occurs with the aggressive action of their own immune cells.
The reasons for violations in the work of this body are:
- insufficient amount of food containing iodine;
- dysfunction of the endocrine system, in which iodine deficiency develops due to poor absorption;
- bad ecology;
- a large number of stress and nervous overload;
- genetic predisposition.
The main symptoms of an overactive thyroid gland are:
- weight loss;
- sudden feeling of fear;
- sleep disorders;
- increased sweating;
- tachycardia;
- trembling of the limbs;
- constant change of mood: irritability, nervousness.
Manifestations of reduced function:
- increased fatigue;
- reduced concentration of attention;
- a large number of edema;
- weight gain;
- deterioration of hair, nails and dry skin;
- constant sleepiness;
- bradycardia (rare heartbeat);
- disorders in the digestive tract.
The consequences of diseases are extremely dangerous. Excess production of hormones affects the functioning of the nervous system and leads to the formation of tumors and nodes in the organ. These people develop mental disorders. Increased production of thyroid-stimulating hormones entails the appearance of Graves' disease, in which bulging eyes and a significant increase in the thyroid gland occur. With hypothyroidism, efficiency is lost and disturbances occur in the work of internal organs, especially the stomach and intestines.
Treatment with folk remedies
Folk remedies for various disorders in the thyroid gland are used quite often. The most effective recipes are those that include wood lice herb. It regulates various disorders both in hyperfunction and in insufficient production of hormones.
Ways to use wood lice:
- The juice. It is necessary to collect fresh leaves of this plant. Then rinse thoroughly and grind in a meat grinder. After that, the resulting slurry is recommended to be placed in gauze and squeezed. The resulting juice should be stored in a glass container in the refrigerator. Take 1 tsp. 1 time per day before meals. The course of treatment is 3 months.
- Infusion. It will take 1 tbsp. l. woodlice and motherwort. In addition, it is necessary to grind the rose hips and mix with herbs in the amount of 1 tbsp. l. All ingredients must be poured into 0.5 liters of boiling water and let it brew for 40 minutes. Alternate with juice and take 1 tsp once a day. for 3 weeks before meals.
If juice was taken before breakfast, then before dinner it is necessary to take an infusion. After the entire treatment course, it is recommended to do an ultrasound.
For diseases, the following recipes are also used:
- Willow ointment for goiter. For its preparation, only fresh raw materials are required. Willow leaves should be collected in an amount of about 200 g and pour 300 ml of warm water. The amount of liquid can be varied. The main thing is that the raw material is completely immersed in it. Willow leaves need to be boiled until the consistency resembles pancake dough. After that, you need to cool the resulting product and apply 2 times a day to the area of \u200b\u200bthe thyroid gland, covering it with polyethylene from above. Willow ointment helps with various types of disorders of the endocrine system. The duration of the procedure is 15-20 minutes. The course of treatment is a month.
- Burdock juice. It treats formations, including calcifications. In order to squeeze the juice, you need to collect fresh leaves along with cuttings. They should be washed and passed through a meat grinder. Then squeeze the resulting mass through gauze and take the juice 1 tbsp. l. 1 time per day for a week before meals. After that, take a break for 7 days and repeat the course. Only 5 cycles.
- Healing beads. This tool is very effective in both reduced and increased function. To do this, you need to peel 10-15 cloves of garlic and string them on a thread, making a small hole in the center. The resulting beads must be worn at night so that they are in contact with the throat. Should be removed in the morning. The course of treatment is 10 days. In this case, the symptoms are very quickly alleviated.
- Compress. Helps with hyperfunctional disorders. You will need 1 large cabbage leaf. First you need to wash it and boil water. It is necessary to dip the sheet into the hot liquid 3 times and attach it to the neck. This compress should be left for 30 minutes. In order not to hold the sheet with your hand, you can wrap it with polyethylene or a towel. This should be done once a day before going to bed for a month.
- Tincture. It will take 500 g of cherry bark. It needs to be broken into small pieces and put in a jar. Then pour 1 liter of vodka, close the lid and put in a dark place. Periodically, the liquid with bark should be shaken. After 3 weeks, the tincture should be filtered and taken 3 times a day 25 minutes before meals, 1 tbsp. l. within 21 days. This remedy is excellent for nodular goiter.

- enhanced thyroid function;
- decreased thyroid function;
- enlargement of the thyroid gland itself.
The first condition is called hyperthyroidism, the second -, and the third is characterized by the formation of nodes of various sizes in the gland. Alas, the very fact of the disease is usually ascertained after it has had time to go through the first stage. This is primarily due to the fact that the symptoms of a sick thyroid gland are very similar to the symptoms of other diseases. After all, a violation of the cycle, a breakdown and emotional fatigue can occur for reasons completely unrelated to the thyroid gland. In addition, all three disorders may have overlapping symptoms.
Therefore, before you start the actual treatment, you must definitely undergo an examination by a doctor. And only after a professional opinion has been received, you can choose which herbs or medicines to get rid of the disease with.
