Before we talk about the new Mercedes-Maybach, let's take a short digression into history. We won’t go too far, let’s just say that Wilhelm Maybach was the designer of the very first cars with a three-pointed star on the emblem. Since then, the Maybach brand has been owned by Mercedes-Benz, which in 2002 tried to revive it. That year, two models were introduced to the world - Maybach 57 and Maybach 62. The numbers in their name meant the rounded length of the car in meters, multiplied by 10. At that time, these huge sedans represented the height of luxury and technical thought, and prices in the region of 400,000 The euro spoke for itself. Even the main (and only) competitor Rolls-Royce Phantom, which was released a year later, was cheaper.
Everyone had a good car. Especially Maybach 62 with huge legroom for rear passengers, an electrochromic (changing transparency) roof, chic trim and a powerful turbocharged V12 engine that developed (depending on the version and year of manufacture) from 550 to 630 hp. But the trouble is, the much less technically sophisticated Rolls-Royce Phantom sold more and more successfully every year, and Maybach sales fell. As a result, having lived for ten years, in 2012 the Maybach brand again plunged into the abyss of oblivion. It seemed like forever.
However, it is 2015, and we again hear the name "Maybach", although not as an independent brand, but as a prefix to the name Mercedes. From now on, cars with a three-beam star are divided into three categories. Regular models are still called "Mercedes-Benz", their sports versions are called "Mercedes-AMG", and luxury modifications will now be called "Mercedes-Maybach". And the first here, of course, was the executive S-Class. Over time, they promise the appearance of Maybach versions for other models.
All this means that the new Mercedes-Maybach is no longer a model in its own right - it is an extended version of the S-Class sedan. Its wheelbase (as well as overall length) is increased by 200mm compared to the long-wheelbase modification of the S-Class. There is also a short-wheelbase modification of this sedan, which is 130 mm shorter than the long-wheelbase one, but it is not officially sold in Russia. From bow to stern, the Mercedes-Maybach stretched almost 5.5 m. This is less than 5.7 m in the previous Maybach 57 model, but, according to company representatives, the new car has more legroom for rear riders. And an alternative to the Maybach 62 version will now be the Mercedes-Maybach Pullman, which has reached a length of 6.5 m. We will talk about it another time.
In addition to the increased length, the Mercedes-Maybach differs from the regular S-Class primarily in improved sound insulation in the rear. The joints between the rear pillars and the doors have been improved, which have received a new tubular profile instead of a flat one, and the glued triangular windows have been carefully sealed. Additional soundproofing mats appeared on the floor. The creators of the model also took into account the fact that when the back of the chair is tilted, the noise picture changes. Improvements have even touched the seat belt reels so that, God forbid, they do not make any sounds and squeaks. In a word, according to the manufacturer, the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is the quietest car in the world for driving in the rear seats.
And yet, Mercedes-Maybach can now be not only 12-cylinder, but also 8- and even 6-cylinder. Yes, yes, if in the past he relied only on the most powerful power unit, then the new model has become much more democratic. So, the 6-cylinder version, which develops 333 hp, is sold from 7,000,000 rubles. This is followed by an option with a V8 engine with a power of 455 hp. for 8,000,000 rubles in the basic configuration. The flagship modification with a 12-cylinder 530-horsepower engine is offered for at least 11,900,000 rubles. Compared to standard S-Class sedans in a similar configuration, a Mercedes-Maybach is about 15-25% more expensive.
May I live like this!
Surprisingly, the body lengthened by 20 cm turned out to be even more elegant than that of the usual long-wheelbase modification. This is because the back door of the novelty has become shorter, and an additional window has appeared behind it. The only thing that confuses me personally in the design is the chrome B-pillar, in my opinion, it looks too defiant. I would paint it black like a standard S-Class. Other features include double chrome strips in the front and rear bumpers, while conventional sedans have single ones. And the radiator grill has three double horizontal jumpers instead of four single ones. True, the base S 600 has exactly the same grille ... In a word, there are differences, but they cannot be called cardinal.
In the front of the cabin there are no differences from standard sedans, except for the Maybach inscription on the cover of the central tunnel box. Finishing materials are luxurious and the build quality of the interior panels is the highest. Fully electronic instrument panel has excellent graphics and excellent readability. The same is the second screen responsible for the settings of the onboard interface. It is quite convenient to use all this economy, but it does not interfere with the instruction manual, since there are a lot of functions. This instruction is in the same place - in one of the menu items.
Before moving to the second row of seats, I will say exactly two words about the driving position - it is perfect. And the seat, which has a huge number of adjustments, is amazingly comfortable. But even more comfortable in the rear seats. There, the passenger can be reclining, besides pulling out the footrest. And there is so much legroom that a person about 180 cm tall is able to stretch out almost to his full height, without even moving the front seat. The seats also have soft pads attached to the headrests.
Between the chairs is a box with silver wine glasses. They are fastened with special paws on the central tunnel so that the liquid does not spill on bumps. And, of course, there is separate climate control, mirrors in the ceiling, heated and cooled coasters, as well as many types of massage, among which I would like to highlight massage with the effect of hot stones. In addition to the seats, the central and side armrests are heated. It warms, by the way, so that the bare hand is really hot. In general, you can live in a car! It is no wonder that I decided to start this test from the back seat, so I command my colleague, who is behind the wheel, to start moving.
Lightness of Being
I almost don't feel the start of the movement. And not only because my colleague performs well as a driver, but also because of the damped reactions to the accelerator pedal. However, I will talk about this later - when I myself sit behind the wheel. In the meantime, all attention to soundproofing. The car is really very quiet - as promised. But I still feel a little noise from the tires. On the other hand, rubber is audible precisely because there are no more extraneous noises.
But most importantly, with increasing speed in the cabin, it practically does not get louder. It is the aerodynamic component that is especially striking here: the sound of the oncoming air flow can be heard only by straining your ears, and only at a speed prohibited by the rules. In a word, if in a city stream the noise insulation is in principle comparable to other executive sedans, then on the motorway the Mercedes-Maybach reasonably claims to be the quietest car in the world.
But on the suspension sensations are ambiguous. The blame for this, I think, lies mostly with the optional 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires. If you drive very slowly, up to 20 km / h, the car very gently “rolls over” over bumps, but I feel itchy on the pimples of asphalt. And sewer hatches and seams on bridges respond to the body with hard shocks. The thing is that the "magic" suspension Magic Body Control, equipped with a stereo camera and designed to prepare the car for the passage of bumps, cannot track short obstacles. It perfectly smoothes the wavy coating, but the hydraulics do not have time to work out the usual potholes, cracks and speed bumps. And I can clearly feel small changes in the coating profile.
But when the speed exceeds "hundred", the behavior of the suspension changes for the better. Now I really experience the feeling of flying, as if moving on a magic carpet, as promised in the press release. Potholes and cracks no longer disturb the car, while the chassis does not allow the body to sway. In general, with the optional 20-inch wheels, the Mercedes-Maybach is perfectly suited for “shooting through” motorways and autobahns, although it is harsh at city speeds. If you install the base 18-inch wheels on it, then at low speeds the ride should be better. And you can also replace the “puncture-free” tires with reinforced sidewalls with ordinary ones, then the sedan will go even softer. It does not hurt to buy a spare wheel, a place for which in the trunk ... is not provided.

Now let's see how the Mercedes-Maybach feels behind the wheel. It feels great, I must say. Almost better than on the back sofa. And here the harsh ride is only a plus. Lack of roll, fast and accurate reactions to steering wheel turns and amazing directional stability! This car can really get the driver on a winding track. And, by the way, the bumps in the front seats are felt less than in the rear.
And with what ease this limousine picks up speed ... Just press a little harder on the perfectly tuned accelerator pedal - and the surrounding cars seem to stop! Moreover, all this happens almost imperceptibly for the driver and passengers, and the reactions to the fuel supply are such that the acceleration is always smooth and at the same time immediate. Shine! I have practically nothing to say about the operation of the 9-band “automatic” - it is so smooth, and the engine thrust is so inexhaustible that you simply don’t remember about the gearbox.
For comparison, we additionally tested the standard S-Class. It differed from the Mercedes-Maybach in the presence of all-wheel drive, air suspension instead of "magic" and 19-inch wheels instead of 20-inch ones. And in this car, I really felt the magic without quotes. The air suspension is much softer, and the 19-inch wheels with higher profile rubber contribute to a smoother ride. This car literally soars over the bumps, as befits an executive sedan.
The cars are similar in terms of handling, but the Maybach version behaves a little more stable on the go due to the greater mass and increased wheelbase. Plus, with the “magic” suspension, there is less roll and buildup, as well as a faster reaction to turning the steering wheel. That is, the driver of the Magic Body Control chassis will certainly like it, but you will have to pay for it by reducing the comfort of the rear passengers, for which, in fact, this car is intended.
But there is good news: Mercedes-Maybach can also be purchased with air suspension and smaller diameter wheels, as well as with all-wheel drive. And I think this option is much more balanced in terms of the combination of comfort and handling. True, for this you will have to abandon the most “fancy” modification of the S 600, since it is available only with the Magic Body Control suspension and only with rear-wheel drive. Such is the ambiguous alternative.

If the model goes into series, which the manufacturer has not yet commented on, then powerful V12 gasoline units will be installed under the hood, producing 530 and 650 “horses”, respectively.
There is also an idea to make fully electric versions with an 80 kWh battery and four electric motors, the total power of which will be 750 hp. with. At the end of 2016, the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 cabriolet was introduced to the world. This unique car was one of the most anticipated new products of the past year. It was built on the platform of the Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet, and this fact alone speaks of the undoubted quality and luxury of this model. A total of 300 copies will be produced, and the starting price of each is 300,000 euros.
The model is impressive. Its length is more than 5 meters, its width reaches 1913 mm, and its height is 1430 mm. Of the external features, one can note the sports front bumper, an abundance of chrome elements and exclusive nameplates. From them, the S65 Cabriolet can be easily distinguished from the S 650.
The luxurious interior deserves special attention. The decoration used precious woods, genuine leather, aluminum and chrome. New multicontour seats were installed. Sewing them, as well as processing panels, is carried out manually.
Equipment
The convertible from Mercedes-Maybach has an impressive basic package. It is equipped with air suspension, feeding system warm air to the neck of the driver and passengers, optics with Swarovski crystals. As a nice bonus, four leather bags with company logos are offered.
Under the hood is a 6-liter V12 engine with two turbines, producing 630 "horses" and consuming 12 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle. Other features include carbon-ceramic brakes, climate control with 12 analyzer sensors, a Burmester audio system, a heated steering wheel, advanced security systems and a projection color display, a night vision function, and an option to reduce turbulence in the cabin that can be observed while driving. with the roof down. And this is just a small list of equipment that comes with the Mercedes-Maybach S650. However, even a short list of advantages is enough to understand: all 300 versions of the convertible will be sold out at the moment.
Maybach brand cars are considered something special and very very luxurious, this is not just a limousine, but something completely exclusive and insanely expensive. At least that's how it has been so far. Now, only a sky-high cost has been preserved from the former Maybach, while the rest of the car has the maximum similarities with the serial Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Nevertheless, this does not prevent the official dealers of the company in Russia from earning 5,000,000 rubles more on each Maybach sold.
As they say, a good show-off is more expensive than money, and Mercedes-Benz marketers have adopted this well-known saying and exploit it in literally both tail and mane. To suck out the pockets of a rich pontorez, a special Maybach package was invented. Yes, it was a package, before it was a completely different car, rather not even a car, but a yacht on wheels.

What has changed?

Equipment Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class 2018-2019
In the technical equipment of the Mercedes Maybach, there were no changes. The new model, like the previous version, is 200 mm better than conventional S-Class sedans in overall length body (5462 mm) and wheelbase size (3365 mm). The range of modifications remained the same. The buyer will be able to choose between petrol options:
- S 450 - 3.0-liter V6 engine (367 hp, 520 Nm);
- S 560 - 4.0-liter V8 engine (469 hp, 700 Nm);
- S 650 - 6.0-liter V12 (630 hp, 1000 Nm).
The new Maybach will be presented in Russia in all three of these versions. The two “younger” ones are traditionally equipped with 4MATIC all-wheel drive and a 9-speed “automatic” 9G-Tronic. The top Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 650 is available in rear-wheel drive with a 7-band automatic transmission 7G-Tronic Plus.
