The protagonist of the story is a 12-year-old boy Vanya Solntsev. He lived in one of the Russian villages. Vanya's father died in the war, and his mother was killed by the Germans. Soon his sister and grandmother died of starvation, and Vanya was left alone. When he was begging in the village, he was caught by the gendarmes and sent to the isolation ward. Vanya escaped from the detention center and tried to cross the front line to get into our army. Vanya was found by Russian scouts in the forest - he was sleeping in a pit and crying in his sleep. They took Vanya to an artillery battery, commanded by Captain Yenakiyev. Seeing Vanya, the captain remembered his wife and son, who died during an artillery raid. He realized that the boy should not remain on the battery and therefore ordered to send Vanya to the rear. But Vanya escaped from Corporal Bidenko, who was instructed to deliver the boy to his destination. Moreover, he ran away from him more than once. For the first time, he jumped out of the truck at full speed, and the corporal could only find him in the forest by chance - the boy climbed a tree, and the primer that Vanya carried with him fell out of his bag. The primer fell right on Bidenko's head. Then, sitting down with the boy on a ride, the corporal tied him to his arm with a rope. At night, from time to time, he pulled the rope, checking whether the boy was in place. And only in the morning he discovered that the rope was tied to the leg of a woman who was riding in the same truck.
Vanya walked through the forest for two days in search of an artillery battery. He wanted to talk to Captain Enakiev, since his departure to the rear seemed to him a real misunderstanding. And it was precisely the captain that he met, however, not knowing that this was Yenakiyev. He told him about how the scouts found him and how he escaped from Bidenko. The captain brought him back to the battery. So Vanya became the "son of the regiment."
Soon the scouts Bidenko and Gorbunkov were ordered to reconnoiter the location of the German units. They took Vanya with them, since he had not yet received a military uniform and looked very much like a little shepherdess. And Vanya knew these places very well, and could guide scouts along paths that no one knows. But Vanya decided to contribute to the lesson and began to sketch in his primer the location of the fords on the river. At that moment, the Germans found him. Bidenko ran to the commander to report what had happened. Enakiev was very angry with the scouts for taking Vanya with them, and sent a whole detachment to rescue the boy. But at this time, the offensive of our units began, and the Germans began to retreat, completely forgetting about the "shepherd boy" they had captured. So Vanya again ended up with the scouts.
After that, Vanya was given a military uniform and Captain Yenakiev, who became more and more attached to the boy, ordered him to be assigned to the first gun of one of the platoons of the battery so that he would help the gunners.
Our units had already approached the border with Germany, and the Yenakiyev battery was preparing for battle. The gun, to which Vanya was attached, turned out to be in the very center of the battle. The captain, who just on the eve of the battle, shared with the gunner his desire to adopt Vanya, found out about this, got to the gun and tried to send Vanya to a safe place. But he flatly refused to leave. Then the captain took a sheet of paper, wrote something on it and gave it to Vanya with the order to take the note to headquarters. Vanya could not follow the order. He delivered the package to the headquarters and went back.
Returning to the battery, he learned that everyone who was near the first gun had died - Captain Enakiev, in order to cover the movement of our units, "caused fire on himself." Before his death, the captain wrote a note asking him to take care of Van. After the captain was buried, as he requested in his farewell note, in his native land, Corporal Bidenko took Vanya to the Suvorov School.
The main characters in Kataev's story are the following characters.
Vanya Solntsev is a twelve-year-old teenager, an orphan, who was stumbled upon by a detachment of Soviet intelligence officers. He became the "son of the regiment", to whom the soldiers gave the nickname "shepherd". After the war, he was enrolled in the Suvorov Military School.
Captain Enakiev is a thirty-two-year-old battery commander. He decided to adopt Vanya, but died during one of the battles.
Corporal Bidenko is a scout who worked as a miner in the Donbass before the war. He was called the "bony giant". It was he, together with Gorbunov and Egorov, who picked up Vanya in the forest.
Sergeant Yegorov is a twenty-two-year-old scout.
Corporal Gorbunov is a scout and friend of Bidenko. Before the war, he worked as a lumberjack in Transbaikalia. The soldiers called him "Siberian" and "hero".
Chapters 1-7
Autumn, damp and cold forest at night. Three scouts are returning from a mission. Unexpectedly, they discover a boy delirious in a dream in an abandoned and dilapidated trench. Waking up, the teenager jumped up sharply and grabbed a "large sharpened nail" to protect himself from an enemy attack. Sergeant Yegorov reassured him, saying that they were "their own."
There is an acquaintance with the commander of an artillery battery, Captain Enakiev, who was respected by all the soldiers. He was a brave soldier, but at the same time he was distinguished by special restraint, a cold and prudent mind.
The found twelve-year-old teenager Vanya Solntsev turned out to be an orphan. All his relatives died in the war (his father, fighting at the front, his mother was killed by the Nazis in the occupied territory, and his sister and grandmother died of starvation). When the boy was “picking up the pieces”, he was seized by the gendarmes and put in a children's isolation ward, where he managed to get sick with typhus and scabies before escaping from the Nazis, almost dying. In his travel bag, with which he tried to cross the front line, they found a shabby primer and a sharpened nail, which served him as a cold weapon for protection. Vanya reminded Yenakiev of his mother, wife and seven-year-old son who died back in 1941.
The fighters fed the hungry teenager to their heart's content with "an unusually tasty mole". “For the first time in these three years, Vanya was among people who did not have to be feared.” He was promised to be trained in military affairs and put "on all types of allowances." However, Yenakiev gives the order to send the boy to Orphanage which is in the rear. Vanya is very upset and gives his word that he will run away on the road.
The next day, late in the evening, Corporal Bidenko returns to his military unit. He is silent and gloomy. At this time, the front line moved very strongly to the west. After being questioned by fellow soldiers, he nevertheless admits that while escorting Vanya to the rear, he ran away from him twice. The first time Bidenko found him after the teenager managed to jump right out of the truck at the turn and hide in the forest, falling asleep on the top of a tree. Only the primer that fell out of the bag on the head of the corporal gave away his location.
And the second escape was already “successful”. Moreover, the boy ran away in the morning, tying the rope from his hand to the boot of the female doctor who was traveling with them. The sergeant periodically pulled in a dream the rope wound with the other end around his fist to confirm that the "escort" was present in his place. However, the teenager was savvy and easily realized his plan.
Chapters 8-14
Solntsev wandered along different roads for a long time until he found the headquarters of some military unit. During this journey, he met a "luxurious boy" who was dressed in a guards uniform and served as a messenger under a certain Major Voznesensky. This meeting turned out to be fateful, because from that moment Vanya began to rave about the idea of returning to the scouts, which he decided to ask the “chief commander” about after he found him.
Since Vanya did not see Enakiev in person, then, mistaking him for an "important boss", he began to complain about the strict captain, who did not want to make him a "son of the regiment." Yenakiev decides to take the boy to the scouts, who are very happy about his return. “So the fate of Vanya magically turned three times in such a short time.”
Scouts Gorbunov and Bidenko take Solntsev with them on a mission without reporting this to the battery commander. The boy knew the area well and could serve as an excellent guide for them. Moreover, he was not yet equipped with uniforms and in his dilapidated clothes he looked very much like a “real village shepherd boy”.
During the assignment, Vanya went ahead to find out the way. However, while he was sketching in the margins of the primer of the site plan, he was captured by the Germans, who arrested him and placed him in a dark dugout. After a few hours later only one horse returned to the meeting place, Bidenko went to the unit to report the incident.
Vanya was interrogated by a German woman who had obvious evidence in the form of a compass and drawings in the primer. However, the boy showed firmness and stamina, not telling the enemy anything.
Chapters 15-21
The little hero hears in the dugout the deafening sound of the artillery attack of our troops. Suddenly, the doors of the dungeon are blown to smithereens from a direct hit by a projectile. The Germans retreat, and soon the Soviet fighters appear.
After Vanya returned to the scouts, they took him to the bathhouse, cut his hair and provided him with full uniforms, putting him on full allowance.
Captain Yenakiev, having learned about the dangerous mission in which the "son of the regiment" participated, gave a scolding to his fighters, who, in his opinion, loved the young hero "too much fun." After that, he called Vanya to him and officially appointed him as his contact.
After the appointment, Solntsev began to live with the captain in his dugout. Yenakiev decided to personally take care of the boy's upbringing and "seconded him to the first gun of the first platoon as a spare number." At first, the “son of the regiment” began to miss his scout friends, but soon got used to the new conditions and realized that this “family” was no worse than the old one.
It so happened that, while talking with gunner Kovalev, the captain shared with him his plans to adopt Vanya after the war. Suddenly, German troops began to advance, which surrounded the Soviet infantry units.
Chapters 23-27
“Captain Enakiev ordered by telephone the first platoon of his battery to immediately withdraw from the position and, without wasting a second, move forward. And he ordered the second platoon to shoot all the time, covering the open flanks of the shock company of Captain Akhunbaev.
Since Vanya was assigned to the first platoon, he was in the thick of things and actively helped his comrades in arms. During the battle, the captain, noticing Vanya, orders him to return to the battery. The boy refuses. Then Yenakiyev orders him to urgently deliver a service package to the headquarters commander.
After returning to the position of his platoon, Vanya learns that the battle is over with heavy losses on his part. The fighters, having shot all the cartridges, entered into hand-to-hand combat with the enemy, during which the captain was also killed. The boy found his corpse on the gun carriage. Bidenko approached the “son of the regiment”, whom he hugged and cried.
After examining the personal belongings of the deceased captain Enakiev, a note was found in which he said goodbye to the battery and expressed the wish that he be buried in his “native land”. In addition, the battery commander asked to take care of the fate of Vanya Solntsev. And after a while, Bidenko, on the orders of the regiment commander, took the boy to the Suvorov military school. Along with soap and food, the fighters handed over to him Captain Yenakiev's epaulettes, which they carefully wrapped in a Suvorov Onslaught newspaper.
Vanya's first night at the Suvorov School was accompanied by a dream about how he was running up a marble staircase, "surrounded by cannons, drums and trumpets." And a gray-haired old man helped him upstairs, on whose chest a diamond star was attached. He told him: “Go, shepherd boy…. Move bolder!"

V. Kataev - the story "The Son of the Regiment". V.P. Kataev wrote his story "The Son of the Regiment" in 1944. About 70 years have passed since then, but we proudly remember our great victory. Great Patriotic War brought a lot of troubles and misfortunes to our country. She ruined many cities and villages, destroyed millions of people, made thousands of children orphans, deprived them of their childhood, sun, joy and love. But the Russian people won this war, because they showed a lot of endurance, courage, courage. He won because he could not help but win: it was a just war for happiness and peace on earth. And it was also a war for childhood, for women, for the family. And in this war, the Russian people showed their warmth, responsiveness, love.
In the center of the story is the image of a boy, Vanya Solntsev, who was left an orphan during the harsh war years. He was found in the forest by Soviet scouts, soldiers of the artillery battery of Captain Enakiev. For some time the boy lived on the battery, in the tent of scouts Vasily Bidenko and Kuzma Gorbunov. And then it was decided to send the child to the rear, to the children's receiver. This was to be done by Corporal Bidenko. However, Vanya did not want to go to the rear, he ran away from Bidenko twice. Then he wandered through the forests, came across Captain Yenakiyev himself. He brought the boy back to the scouts. And Vanya again began to live with them.
The book reveals the character of a young hero who has suffered so much grief. We see how he needs love and care, how he attaches himself to the fighters. Vanya is a smart, brave, but at the same time wayward boy. Once the scouts were given the task - before the battle, to find out the location of the German reserves and find good positions for firing platoons. And they decided to take Vanya with them. Taking the initiative, the boy was captured by the Germans, only the offensive of our units saved him. He got back to his old friends. And Vanya was put on full allowance, he became the son of a regiment. The boy was very proud of his new position. Captain Yenakiyev became very attached to him, because he reminded him of his dead son. He was going to officially adopt Vanya, made him his contact. But in one of the heavy battles, the entire crew of the first gun, including Captain Yenakiyev, perished. He managed to save the boy, sending him to headquarters. At the end of the story, Corporal Bidenko took Vanya to the Suvorov School.
Thus, we see the process of forming the boy's personality, gaining masculinity, love and trust in people.

Chapter 1
On a dark night, three scouts were returning through the forest to their own. Traces of a recent battle were visible everywhere, it seemed that the Germans had left the forest, but the scouts only redoubled their caution.
Suddenly, Sergeant Yegorov caught a quiet, unrepeatable sound. He signaled to stop. The scouts listened, but not understanding the nature of the sounds moved forward.
Sounds were heard from a small trench, and Yegorov crawled closer and shone a flashlight into the trench. The boy was sleeping there. He slept restlessly, anxiously. Suddenly, something seemed to throw him up and Yegorov barely had time to intercept the hand with a sharpened nail. He calmed the child, and he whispered "Ours" and lost consciousness.
Chapter 2
On the site, arranged on the top of a pine tree, Captain Enakiev, the battery commander, and Captain Akhunbaev, the battalion commander, plotted intelligence data on maps. Nearby were two telephone operators, Sergeant Yegorov and Lieutenant Sedykh. Occasionally Enakiev turned to Yegorov for confirmation of the data.
Soon the attack was expected and everyone was in a hurry.
Chapter 3
Finally, the data was entered on the maps, and Akhunbaev hurried to the position, checking his watch with Yenakiyev. Yenakiev considered the German positions for a long time, thinking about the mysterious ravine that could hide the German tanks. But then came the order to attack. Yenakiev gave the necessary orders and inquired about the boy delivered the day before.
Yegorov said that the Germans killed the boy's father, then his mother, and the village was burned down. The boy wandered through the woods, had been ill with typhus, and definitely wanted to kill some German. According to the boy, he was twelve years old.
Enikaev remembered his son and wife, who died at the beginning of the war, and became gloomy. He asked the boy's name and Yegorov replied that his name was Vanya Solntsev.
Enakiva ordered to send the boy to the rear, but Yegorov warned that he promised to run away in this case. He would like to leave the boy in the scouts.
Chapter 4
Vanya ate greedily and quickly emptied the soldier's bowler hat. Corporal Bidenko and Gorbunov looked at the boy with pleasure. They told him that the captain would definitely enlist him in the unit and take him on allowance. They began to drink tea, listening to the sounds of battle.
At this time, Yegorov came, sent Gorbunov to the line, to the place of the killed intelligence officer, and Bidenko ordered the boy to be taken to the rear.
The scouts were upset, but the order of the commander had to be carried out. Vanya understood that these people loved him and did not want to let him go, and therefore promised to run away. At this, Bidenko only grinned.
Chapter 5
The next day, Bidenko returned angry as hell and immediately lay down, turning away from everyone. The soldiers cheerfully discussed the details of yesterday's battle. And Bidenko suddenly said that he slapped the boy and did not follow the order of the commander. But he did not tell the details of how the little boy circled the famous intelligence officer around his finger. They became known later.
Chapter 6
As soon as the car drove through the forest for about five kilometers, Vanya jumped out of the body on the move and rushed into the forest. Bidenko stopped the car and followed confidently, knowing that the boy without a compass would definitely start to take to the right, and there he would catch him. He even smiled, anticipating how he would crawl out of the bushes in front of Vanya. But two hours passed, and Vanya was not there.
Bidenko returned to the car, but it had already left. He realized that he had to return to the unit and sat down under a tree. Suddenly, a primer fell on top of him.
Bidenko climbed a tree and found Vanya sleeping, who so easily and simply outwitted an experienced scout.
Chapter 7
Bidenko led Vanya to the rear, waiting for a passing car. And Vanya incited the corporal to test his abilities, the general finding of Bidenko in the forest is faster and easier than he was looking for him. And at the same time, Vanya kept promising to run away.
Therefore, when they climbed into a passing car, Bidenko tied Vanya to himself with a rope, on a double marine knot. It was a long drive, a lot of people packed into the car, and when it got dark people began to fall asleep.
Vanya also fell asleep, followed by Bidenko, not forgetting to pull the rope from time to time. However, soon someone was indignant at these twitches in a female voice and Bidenko lit a lantern and saw that Vanya was not there.
He jumped out of the car into the darkness, spat on everything and began to look for a ride to return to the unit.
Chapter 8
For two days Vanya searched for the scouts' tent, but they went far ahead, and the oncoming soldiers answered in monosyllables "I don't know." Vanya even thought about going to the rear, to an orphanage. But then he met a boy a little older than himself in a cavalry uniform. The boys started talking, and Vanya found out that the stranger was not only a corporal, but also had a medal.
The boy said that he was accepted into the sons of the regiment, and when Vanya said with resentment that they had not taken him, he dryly remarked that he apparently did not show himself to the soldiers.
And Vanya decided to find Captain Enakiev at all costs. He sat near the hut, in which he suspected headquarters and waited. And then a stately officer came out of the hut.
Chapter 9
Vanya saw four stars and guns on the officer's shoulder straps, and decided that he was in charge enough to cope with Yenakiyev. He turned to the officer and began to ask if he could order the captain. Upon learning from the officer that no, Vanya was upset and mentioned the name of Yenakiyev.
The officer, and this was Yenakiev, was greatly surprised and began to question the boy. So he found out that Vanya ran away from Bidenko and asked for all the details of the night escape. And then he ordered the orderly to put Vanya on a horse, went straight to the scouts.
Chapter 10
Yenakiev showed up to the scouts and they immediately realized that they had to wait for a thunderstorm. Bidenko reported the boy's escape and said that Yegorov had given him four outfits. Yenakiyev added two more and began to question the scouts about the boy. They admitted that they really liked the boy, that he had a place in the army. Then Enkiev ordered the orderly to bring Vanya and left him with the scouts, saying that he should live with them for the time being, and then it will be seen.
Chapter 11
Only in the dugout, surrounded by joyful and surprised scouts, did Vanya learn that the officer who had delivered him was Captain Enakiev.
Chapter 12
Bidenko and Gorbunov had been waiting for the boy's return for three hours in the cold swamp. A horse appeared, but it was alone. Vanya is gone.
The day before yesterday, Bidenko and Gorbunov took Vanya with them on reconnaissance for the first time without informing the commander. They took the boy as a guide, because he knew these places very well. Vanya with a horse made his way ahead of the scouts. Unexpectedly, he stumbled upon a German picket. At first, Vanya was frightened when the German began to interrogate him, then he got angry, then he began to pretend to cry, saying that he was looking for a horse. And the German released the boy. The scouts moved on.
Chapter 13
In the morning things got even easier. Vanya went ahead, scouted the area, returned and quacked, showing that the path was clear. Thus passed day and night. Before dawn, Vanya again went forward, but did not return. And now his horse is back.
The scouts hobbled the horse and went to the rescue. They saw Vanya's tracks in the swamp, but then they disappeared, and the scouts went to the river bank. There they found the boy's pencil and traces of German boots. Following the footsteps, the scouts realized that the Germans had captured Vanya and taken him across the bridge to the other side of the river.
Then Gorbunov ordered Bidenko to return to the unit, and he began to think how to help the boy out.
He did not know that Vanya made observations without permission and wrote down the results in a primer. Behind this occupation, the Germans caught him.
Chapter 14
Vanya was taken to the dugout, where a German officer was sitting and there was a woman translator, whom Vanya called a teacher. In front of the German lay Vanya's primer with a map. The German woman began to interrogate Vanya in good Russian. She asked where the boy got the compass from and who drew the diagram in the primer. From the marks of the indelible pencil on the boy's tongue, she knew that he had drawn the map himself. But Vanya was stubbornly silent and the German woman began to beat him.
Vanya hit his head painfully and lost consciousness.
Chapter 15
The boy woke up in another dugout from nearby explosions. The last explosion was heard very close by and the dugout door was torn off. The boy got out and saw an empty, bombed-out forest, where the Germans had already left.
Suddenly a Russian soldier appeared in front of him with a machine gun. It was Gorbunov. He hugged the boy and held him to his chest.
And Vanya first of all told Gorbunov about the headquarters dugout, which was very warm and cozy. Gorbunov immediately hung a sign on the dugout stating that he was engaged in reconnaissance.
Chapter 16
Vanya received new uniforms and was in seventh heaven with happiness. And then the hairdresser came, and the fighters began to argue how to cut Vanya. Vanya wanted with a forelock, someone advised at zero, someone for boxing, someone for a comb.
The hairdresser listened to all the advice and cut Vanya with a bang.
Chapter 17
After the haircut, Gorbunov and Bidenko took Vanya to the bathhouse and scraped off all the years of dirt. Only then Vanya was able to put on new uniforms.
There was a slight hitch with the footcloths, because Vanya did not know how to wind them correctly, but Bidenko showed the boy twice, and he easily wound the footcloth and put on his boots.
As soon as Bidenko managed to pierce an additional hole in the belt, Vanya was called to the commander.
Chapter 18
Vanya, out of habit, turned to Captain Enakiev as if he were an uncle, and then he began to prove that he was a soldier, because he had epaulettes and new form. But Yenakiyev got the boy to start answering according to the regulations and laughed merrily. He has long loved the boy. He took out a box of cookies and chocolate, and began to talk to Vanya about life.
Vanya became serious and announced that he would become an artilleryman. Captain Yenakiev left him on the battery.
Chapter 19
Vanya began to live with Yenakiyev and learned to perform the duties of an artilleryman. He was already known at the battery and received very cordially. Artillerymen lived as one family. And although the scouts were the elite, the gunners had their own trump cards. They had a real accordion and the best accordionist of the part, and they sang very well.
The best calculation was the calculation of the first gun, where Kovalev served, a hero and the best gunner in the country, elderly, grandfather, but very brave.
Vanya quickly fell in love with his gun, and learned a lot about the life of gunners. He was especially attracted to the gunner Kovalev, a seasoned man who had seen a lot.
Chapter 20
Kovalev explained to Vanya that they were already standing near the German border, and that the scouts had already gone to the other side. Vanya regretted a little that he had left the scouts, but then the command to fight was heard.
The calculation began to fire and Vanya at first became deaf, but then rushed to pick up the fallen shells.
Then Kovalev let Vanya look through a black tube at a lone pine tree, along which he aimed a cannon. But it turned out that the pine was behind, and the projectile flew forward. Vanya could not understand this.
But Kovalev explained that observers are monitoring the gap and they are also correcting it. He slightly turned the barrel of the gun and fired another volley. Then the volleys went one by one. Even Vanya was given one shot at Germany.
Chapter 21
In the fall, Akhunbaev and Yenakiyev developed a plan for a new attack. For Akhunbaev, everything was clear and simple, but Yenakiyev doubted, he did not know what reserves the Germans had. And the success of the planned attack largely depended on its battery.
Enakiev walked around the guns, looked at the sleeping Vanya, found out that the boy was doing an excellent job with his new duties, and sat down to talk with Kovalev.
Chapter 22
Enakiev told Kovalev about his desire to adopt Vanya, but at that moment mortar volleys were heard. The Germans pulled up reserves and now smashed two companies of Akhunbaev.
Yenakiev immediately gave the command to the guns for battle. The Germans figured out Akhunbaev's plan and got ahead of him.
Chapter 23
Yenakiev arrived at the observation post and contacted Akhunbaev. He said that he was attacking the Germans, and asked for fire support. Enakiev sent Vanin's crew to the new position.
The truck quickly brought the gun to the right place and then Vanya met Bidenko. He was glad to meet, although he looked at Vanya a little jealously.
There was a command "On wheels!"
Chapter 24
The soldiers rolled the gun in the direction indicated by Bidenko, followed by boxes of shells. Vanya picked up one projectile and also dragged it forward.
The gun was installed in potato tops, there was another one nearby. Enakiev and Akhunbaev were also here. The crews were preparing for battle.
But here comes the fight. The Germans were advancing, the guns fired so fast that no one picked up the fallen shells, they were simply pushed away with their feet.
Then Akhunbaev's machine guns started talking and the Germans ran.
The guns rolled forward again.
It seemed that victory was close and Akhunbaev brought the last reserve into battle.
But then six tanks and German infantry appeared in the distance.
It seemed only then that Enakiev noticed Vanya and immediately told him to leave. Anywhere, but away from the guns. Vanya simply refused.
Then Yenakiyev gave him a package and ordered him to deliver it to the headquarters of the division. Vanya saluted, took the package and ran. Behind him he heard more volleys of guns.
Chapter 25
Vanya gave the package to the division commander, who gloomily read it and said that he already knew. Vanya saw that fight already going along the entire front, slowly moving west. Tanks, guns, soldiers moved around. Vanya hurried back to the height where Captain Enakiev was, not knowing that the battle there was already over.
Vanya did not know that when the shells ran out, the remnants of Akhunbaev's company and Yenakiyev's gunners fought back with hand grenades and shovels, and then caused fire on themselves.
Vanya did not recognize the area. There were craters everywhere, wrecked tanks, a wrecked truck, unfamiliar gunners passed by.
And Vanya saw his gun. It leaned on empty boxes, and Captain Yenakiyev was sitting on the gun carriage. It seemed to Vanya that he was sleeping, but a huge pool of blood was spreading on the ground.
Vanya looked at the motionless captain in horror when a hand fell on his shoulder. It was Bidenko. Vanya rushed to him and sobbed.
Chapter 26
In Yenakiyev's pocket they found a note written in clear handwriting, without the slightest blot. In it, the captain said goodbye to the battery, and asked to take care of the fate of Vanya Solntsev.
Soon after Enakiev was buried, Vanya was summoned to the regiment commander, who announced to the boy that he was being sent to the Suvorov School.
The boy was accompanied by Sergeant Bidenko with a bandaged arm. And Vanya was carrying a large bag with things that scouts and gunners had collected for him. There were also captain Yenakiyev's epaulettes in this bag, which the regiment commander gave to Vanya. He told the boy that he was the son of a regiment, and therefore should not disgrace the honor of the regiment in the school.
Bidenko handed over the boy to the duty officer of the school and said goodbye to Vanya.

If you read the short story “Son of the Regiment”, then the story should begin with how the main character, Vanya Solntsev, was found. During the raid, scouts found him in a trench. He was sleeping and delirious. But as soon as the light of a flashlight fell on him, he pulled out a nail. Sergeant Yegorov barely had time to intercept his hand.
Further in the story "Son of the Regiment" you can read the life story of the protagonist. His father died in the first days of the war, his mother was killed by the Germans, and he himself has been wandering through the forests for almost three years. Having learned this, Yegorov reports to Captain Enakiev about Van. But, despite the requests of the scouts to leave the boy at home, he gives the order to take him to the rear. This is entrusted to Corporal Bidenko. But Vanya Solntsev jumps out of the truck and hides in the forest. The corporal has been looking for him in the forest for more than two hours and discovers him only thanks to the primer, which Vanya had unsuccessfully dropped out when he was sitting on a tree. Now Bidenko decides on more formidable measures. He ties Vanya by the hand with sea knots, and attaches a rope to his elbow. During the trip, he periodically pulls the rope. But in one of the next checks, he hears the indignant voice of a woman to whom a rope is now tied.
If you read the summary further on “Son of the Regiment”, then you will find out how Vanya meets another teenager. He boasts that he is the son of a regiment and even went on a raid once. Vanya likes this idea, and he decides to go to headquarters and complain about Captain Enakiev, who sent him to the rear. But a fraction of the case near the headquarters collides just with him. After listening to the boy, Captain Enakiev takes him to the scouts and gives them on bail. The nickname Shepherds immediately stuck to Vanya.

The commander of the artillery regiment, having learned about this, sends Vanya to the Suvorov military school. On the way, he is collected by the entire squad of scouts and, as parting words, they put the shoulder straps of Captain Enakiev.
