Survival courses in extreme conditions. "Survival courses" in the Russian army Survival courses in the wild
Let's start with the fact that courses are provided even for women who came to serve in the armed forces through contact. The name "survival courses" is popular. Speaking correctly, this is an intensive military training program. Being a civilian, it is impossible to master all the subtleties military service, as well as prepare for their special rhythm of life. No books will help better than these courses. This intensive program includes learning techniques for self-control and discipline, as well as overcoming fear.
In general, this special complex exercises that every contract soldier must go through before starting the service. Of course, everyone is interested in how long such a preparation procedure takes. These are short courses, their duration is 6 weeks. During this time, a person is completely immersed in military affairs, his consciousness and views change. In general, he is preparing to become a real soldier.
It should be noted that in Russia, survival courses began to be applied relatively recently. Since 2012, they have been actively used to train contract soldiers. After their introduction, controversy erupted over the fact that these courses are humiliating and illegal. As practice shows, they help a person to rethink his choice and finally make sure that he is right. The benefits of the courses are:
- the ability to quickly determine whether a citizen is fit for service;
- preparing a person for his future work;
- possibility to refuse service in case of difficulties.
The cons are the following:
- heavy loads;
- the essence of the program is not connected with any type of troops;
- efficiency depends on the conditions of the training unit.
Per last years the number of those who changed their minds about becoming contract soldiers after completing the intensive program increased by 350 people.
On the one hand, this is good, since those who cannot serve are immediately eliminated. But still, some people need more time than 6 weeks to adapt and get used to it. Therefore, opinions about these courses are twofold.
The essence of the courses
Survival courses consist of:
- Intense physical activity.
- Fire, combat, chemical, medical, tactical and engineering training.
Most courses are held at the training grounds. During the intensive program period, all fighters:
- eat dry rations;
- master the skills of camouflage and methods of setting up field camps;
- master the skills of action against the enemy;
- are trained in the tactics of conducting actions of military formations;
- learn to overcome various obstacles.
Toward the end of the course, all military personnel are expected to march for 150 km. Special conditions are being created that are as close as possible to real combat operations. At the very end of the program, everyone takes physical and combat training exams. The course for women is somewhat different from men's. Physical exercise slightly modified, the standards are lowered. But often, many women who are over 30 years old suffer from an increase in pressure after a 5-kilometer forced march. In addition, women of a fragile physique face a problem when carrying backpacks with uniforms.
In general terms, survival courses are aimed at making the young fighter aware that he will have to risk his life, take responsibility and make serious decisions quickly. Also, contractors must understand that they will have to work not for a salary, but for the well-being of their homeland. Wages in this case only ensure a decent life for those who donate it. If a fighter believes that contract service is an alternative to regular work, but with a high salary, as well as the opportunity to "slope" from an urgent one, then he is mistaken, so he has nothing to do in the armed forces. This school of survival is necessary for the citizen to finally decide on his choice. Before the introduction of these courses, the military often encountered fighters who, either physically or morally, did not pull the service, as a result of which they abandoned this business, only wasting their time and effort.
Problems of survival courses for contractors
Since this program was developed recently, it is not fully coordinated, and has its own problems. In general, there are two:
- Corruption. Today, bribery is found everywhere, whether it is a hospital, educational institution or the army. Those who have enough money often have the best conditions and they are treated more favorably than others. Regarding the courses, if they are conducted by those who are not averse to taking a bribe, then, of course, the fighters may not take them, but automatically be included in the list of contract soldiers. The state needs to fight such individuals and not allow some to try their best, while others get everything just because they have a fat wallet.
- Equipment. Unfortunately, fighters have to buy uniforms for their money, which cost a lot of money. The state does not equip the units with all the necessary equipment, and what is there is old and practically out of order.
Otherwise, survival courses have a large number of pluses. The main thing is not to be afraid to pass them. If you decide to become a military man, then you need to be prepared for difficulties, restrictions and difficult conditions.
What is the difference between regular service and contract service?
Contractual service is military activity for a fixed period of time by agreement. For such activities, citizens receive wages that are usually higher than those who are not contract workers. In order to become a military contractor, you must meet the requirements:
- be of a suitable age, i.e. between 18 and 40 years old;
- have a secondary or higher education;
- pass a special medical commission and be in categories "A" or "B";
- comply with the standards set out in the NFP.
The contractor must be hardy, decisive, executive, strong and responsible. He must be ready to take orders and give them out. In addition, it is important for a contractor to be prepared for the toughest conditions of survival. First of all, he should think about the Motherland, and then about himself.
How to become a contractor
To enter this kind of service, you need to come to the local point of contractors for detailed advice on further service. Next, with a passport, you need to apply to the local commissariat, writing there an application for admission to the number of contract soldiers. After that, the citizen is expected to be checked by a medical commission, as well as checking all documents. Then he is sent to a military unit to undergo a survival school. At the end of the course, a decision is made on whether the citizen is ready to become a contract soldier or not. If everything is in order, then he goes to the main place, where he will continue to serve.
Advantages and disadvantages of such a service
The benefits of a contract service are:
- high wage(from 30 thousand rubles).
- Permanent travel.
- The presence of a service apartment at the place of service.
- Lots of perks.
- Honor and respect among other professions.
- Free travel in public transport.
- The presence of clothing that can be worn even in civilian life.
- Retirement at 45.
- Vacation - 45 calendar days.
Several cons:
- risk to life and health;
- difficult conditions in which you sometimes have to be;
- constant traveling, because of which you rarely see your relatives;
- unquestioning execution of orders;
- great responsibility.
The theme of survival is now more fashionable than ever. She has amassed millions of fans around the world. Each has its own topic: this is both, and an opportunity, and purely applied things (light a fire, build a shelter,). There are those who decided on the topic survival earn some gold, someone even created survival courses.
Everyone approached this question creatively. The first ones attached a “survival edition” sign to their product, the rest was done by the client himself. Example − survival knife. Others have gone further and modernized . And someone started from scratch. For example, Bear Grills is a Guinness World Record holder, SAS member and role model. And not only. Few people know that Mishka, except in BBC programs, also leads survival courses in Britain and the USA.
There are such survival courses and with us. Some of them have instructors. the highest level but not in all. And sometimes it happens that graduates survival courses, imagining himself as the newly minted John Rambo, they go to the forest, where. Here are a few reasons why survival courses kill.
Reason 1: The coach is a tourist, or ex-military, or both
Well, these guys are flint! They make nails out of these! So? Yes, not so.
Tourist- it's just a person who is in different places. Of course, he has (should have) some experience. Specific. Again, what type of tourism is he "special" in? Maybe he went around all the museums in Milan and Palermo. Or Antalya and Hurghada. This is also tourism. Another thing is mountain or foot. Serious. When fight against the elements goes for life and you are mentally ready to leave a couple of fingers in this struggle, just to get out.
Do you remember how Vysotsky wrote:
Who has not been herewho didn't risk
He didn't test himself.
Even if below he grabbed the stars from heaven ...
It's about the mountains. It sometimes gets so hot there that you go and think that now: they will tear from tension or stick together from diffusion.
Reason 2: the coach is a military man
Reason 3: This is a commercial event
Com-mer-ches-something. Do you understand what that means? Let's talk anyway. This means that you are at school, and the instructor is at work. He is responsible for yours. That's why real dangers will not. You never know. Your training (or lack thereof) depends entirely on the coach and his confidence. Not to be confused with professionalism.
Or maybe you, which I visited: “We have tents, food and water, but let's imagine that we ended up in the forest without them. ?..” Education For some reason it didn't work that time.
Of course, you will get a little extreme. For example, across the river. But just to keep you from how cool you are prepper and wrote fiery thanks on his page in fb. As you understand, this is a sundress.
Reason 4: minimum time
survival course on average lasts 2-3 days (or even less).
Consider 3 full days - 72 hours. Of these, 24 - sleep, 12-15 - household. 6-10 hours for rest and errors. There are 23-30 hours left for training. Less than a third. And that doesn't include round-trip travel time. There is no time left for working out in practice and water, only for lighting a fire. In the minimum time. It is necessary to tell the theory also. And so it turns out: survival theory there is, but we cannot apply it in practice, as well as adequately calculate the forces / time for these actions.
Reason 5: No detentions or little practice
This is reminiscent of laboratory work in physics in high school in the mid 90s of the last century. The teacher tells the students what will happen if you turn the coil and bring two differently charged balls together. Often the teacher himself never carried out this experience in practice. I've only seen it in training videos. But it is not important. To teach, as they say, do not move bags.
So do we. Here is the basis of the fire, you put kindling, "teal" and the fire is ready. He put the branches, tied them, overlaid them with spruce branches - that's the hut. That's probably how they came about couch survivalists.Often the reason for this is both the lack of practice of the instructor himself, and the extremely limited time frame. Remember, we counted: 20-30 hours.
Reason 6: the coach does not teach but shows how he does it
To solve any problem, there are a million solutions. On the survival courses show:
- 2 ways to make fire;
- 1 type of cover.
For those who came for extreme - more than enough. Whoever expected to gain knowledge should be at least disappointed.
There may be several reasons for this. For example,
- limited knowledge of the trainer (he knows only a couple of ways/options);
And it turns out that the coach gives turnkey solution rather than a decision algorithm. It makes sense to act differently in different situations.
Reason 7: lack of scientific base and author's developments
Often survival instructors they sin in one moment: they have reached a certain level and that's it. No skill improvement, no learning something new. But the world, as we know, is developing and the knowledge gained 5-7 years ago is often no longer relevant. Now it is unlikely that anyone will go either with a pood primus stove of the 1800-shaggy year of release. Trekking boots and gas burners weighing +- 100 grams have long been invented! But updating knowledge, learning and practicing something new is not all. The argument is simple and merciless: if you know how to use old knowledge, you will easily learn how to use new ones. Oh well.
The same story with the creation of a scientific base. The instructors are too busy to improve existing knowledge and develop new ways to save lives. You can do everything easier and more efficiently, but why!? As we remember, they have . From this reason follows the following.
Reason 8: Lack of Variation in the Learning Process
We live in a non-linear world and hundreds, sometimes hundreds of thousands. This is the foundation of TRIZ (the theory of inventive problem solving). I mean that many survival programs built on the principle of "by all means". The program has a concrete foundation around which it revolves from course to course, year after year. Even in the explanation. What do you think, if something goes wrong, what will happen to the coach? I think there will be an inscription in his eyes. I am generally silent about the flexibility of explanations, tasks, subjects of study, but flexibility is the most important thing in survival process.
Reason 9: The illusion of knowledge is the illusion of security
Theory without practice is dead. Practice without theory is blind.
Let's imagine the feelings of a graduate of such survival courses on Monday after the course: he is undoubtedly cool, brutal, pumped and whoever he meets on the way. Though a bully, even a bear. Just like you and me! He has a lot of knowledge, 3 cars of impressions, and even has practical experience. Positive practical experience. From the point of view, this is important - a person should succeed in everything. And now, our superhero after a couple of months ended up in the forest. I went for mushrooms. And got lost. Do you think he has flint and tinder and everything else? Did he take with him NAZ, a knife? More likely no than yes. Not to mention that 90% of the knowledge gained is forgotten in the first 48 hours.
Reason 10: They only teach how to survive in the forest
Oddly enough, but the forest is not the most common habitat of modern man. They go to the forest for mushrooms / berries and. A modern inhabitant rarely appears in such an inhospitable place as a forest. More often, a sapiens hamster chooses. Last but not least, the village. So does it make sense to study the forest, ways to survive in the forest and do not touch at all safety in the city. But it is not so interesting and emotional. Compare for yourself, an entourage conversation around a fire in camouflage against a visit, where blood, shit, intestines and meat sometimes do not have time to clean up due to the number of victims. But city survival This is dry practice and calculation.
Final Thoughts
This is far from full list. But it reveals the main problems of mankind associated with survival courses. It does not apply to any specific courses. It is only in the matter of survival training and the content provided. Pay attention to it or not - it's up to you.
In no way am I suggesting that you stop attending these courses. It's fun. And sometimes helpful. But for you, as a client, it must also be safe. First of all, when after a while you will. Although, I'm lying. I don't feel sorry for you. You're crazy, since you yourself went to such survival courses but think of your mommy when you make fire. Have pity on the old woman's nerves.
Many of us are interested in issues of survival in nature. The reasons may be different, but the goal, as a rule, is the same - to learn to feel confident in an extreme situation, to gain faith in one's strengths and capabilities.
Attempts to independently master the methods of rescue in nature, using a variety of textbooks and manuals, do not always give a positive result. Many of these manuals are designed for operations in a hot arid climate and were written during the colonial wars. For Russia, most of the recommendations and techniques are useless. For example, making fire by friction is possible only in ideal conditions in terms of air humidity and temperature, say, in the attic. Many textbooks copy the same mistakes, which in a real situation can cost the life of the person who makes them.
Exit? To undergo training, at least initial, under the guidance of people who have tested and worked out the science of survival in practice. At the same time, there are only a few specialized survival schools in Russia today. Was at one time good school"PAL-VIS", but today V. Sundakov trains people in Southeast Asia. There is a survival school "Siberian Way" in the European Clinical Hospital by G.S. Cheurina. His approach and teaching methods are maximally focused on traditional ways ensuring the livelihoods of the peoples of Russia, many of whom live in conditions that are considered extreme.
Now residents of Moscow and the Moscow region have the opportunity to be trained under the environmental survival program.

The other day in the Domodedovo district passed the course of survival in the wild. It was the second course in a row, organized by the tourist club "City Escape" near Moscow. And before that, an open lecture was held in Moscow, at which all those who were interested could get acquainted with the aspects of survival in the natural environment in theory, and the most motivated then went “into the field” - to learn the science of survival in practice.
On Defender of the Fatherland Day, sacrificing a sound and long sleep, eleven cadets arrived neither light nor dawn in a snowy forest to learn how to make fire without matches and lighters, build a special “winter” fire, build reliable shelters from bad weather and cold, spend the night in the middle of snowdrifts and frozen Christmas trees with almost home comfort. It would seem that not the most necessary skills in the metropolis, but among the guys there were not only avid hikers, for whom spending the night in the forest under the open sky is a common thing. There were also beginners here - those who had just set foot on the “hiking” path, and now are seriously concerned about acquiring new useful skills, and even just outdoor enthusiasts.
Imagine that you are alone and lost in the forest. Your phone is dead, it is already starting to get dark, and clouds are beginning to gather in the soul and in the sky - it will rain at night. Slowly but surely fear creeps up on you. What are your next steps? At such moments, your well-being depends on them more than ever.
To find yourself in a similar situation, it is not at all necessary to seriously engage in tourism and go on difficult hikes in the wilderness. According to statistics, most incidents of this kind occur at times when we least expect it. When we go into the forest “for an hour to pick mushrooms”, without telling anyone about it, when a car breaks down on an empty road in winter, as well as other stupid accidents that should never have happened.
According to the same statistics, the victims of such situations are people who are the least prepared for them. But how do you prepare for this? At the lecture, I well remembered the phrase: "knowledge of the simplest safety rules is already preparation." And it really is. A simple example of this: when going for a walk in the forest, skiing in the park, and, even more so, on a hike, be sure to tell someone about your route and the approximate time of return. It's not difficult at all, but extremely useful. If, once in an emergency, you master some skills - you can pull yourself together, act and make decisions, provide yourself with warmth and shelter - you will most likely save the life of yourself and those around you.
On this February day, we, 11 cadets, found ourselves in just such a situation of survival, albeit conditionally. From equipment we had only a few axes and steel - not so much. But, as it turned out later, such a set is more than enough to provide yourself with everything you need in the forest. A flint and flint, for example, allows you to get fire in any conditions, and, unlike matches and lighters, it does not break, does not end and does not get wet. With the help of an ax, with a certain skill, you can build yourself an excellent hut with a fire, the temperature inside of which will rise to +20 degrees even in severe frost.
The process of our classes was led by Vasily D. - an instructor of first aid and tactical medicine, an experienced hiker and a specialist in survival in the wild. At the end of the day, I managed to ask Vasily a few general questions.
- Vasily, the Internet is now interpreting the word "survival" differently - someone is preparing for a zombie apocalypse, someone plans to survive in the forest with one knife - like Bear Grylls. What is the interpretation of the concept of "survival" within the framework of this course?
I would start with a conceptual one: with my attitude to the very term "survival". I don't like this term. There is some hysterical pathos, tragedy in it. Such balancing on the verge of life and death, in most cases, without getting off the couch, where under one hand is a bottle of cola, and under the other is a thick sandwich with sausage. Maybe I have a preconceived notion, but judging by social networks, this topic is largely the fruit of the phobias of the so-called office plankton and strange looking lumpen with uncertain financial and social status.
I prefer the term "basic skills". In my opinion, this much more accurately reflects the philosophy, the knowledge and skills that I pass on to people who come to the courses. And that these courses are called Survival Courses - it's just a tribute to the established term. Otherwise, it would take a long time to explain what is meant. And then everyone understands immediately or almost immediately. Although, once again, I categorically do not like the term "survival".
As for the different interpretations of the concept of survival, you have not named everything yet! (laughs). Zombie apocalypse, atomic war and subsequent nuclear winter, evil alien invasion, pole shift, another fish flu pandemic, global financial collapse, civil unrest with the disintegration of society, man-made disasters, what else do we have there?
Oh yes: I just got lost in the forest with one bag of mushrooms and a table knife, lagged behind my own on a hike, and similar incredible situations.
Of course, they are not as relevant as the same zombie apocalypse or alien attack, but they can also happen. And with everyone. This course is designed specifically for such people who want to be prepared for fairly prosaic things: how to work with their fear and panic, how to make a fire, how to equip a temporary home in order to save strength and live relatively comfortably until a way out of this state of emergency is found. how to provide yourself with drinkable water, what to do with food, providing yourself and others with the necessary first aid, what to do with a compass and a map, how to navigate the terrain. In general, by and large, this is the set of skills and knowledge that any person should have. We are too distant from nature and too arrogant in our confidence in the security of goods. modern civilization anywhere at any time. Although, life constantly shows us that this is far from being the case. Whoever understands this comes to us.
- Who usually takes part in the course?
It is difficult to unambiguously make some kind of social or age cut to answer this question. Parents come with children aged 5-6, and teenagers who want something beyond computer-gaming addiction. As a rule, these are quite extraordinary, independent personalities. It's very interesting with them. Old people come. 45-60 years is normal. Such people compensate for some “missed” experiences in their lives. For example, at school, whenever possible, he shied away from class trips, and now it’s a shame in the company that he can’t even kindle coals in the brazier, not like a full-fledged fire for heating on a winter night. Such cadets are extremely diligent. They literally shake knowledge out of the instructor. It is not enough for them and they want more and more knowledge and skills. They are just great students.
Very young girls also come, who, when they try to strike a match on the box, immediately throw both in fear in fear. You laugh in vain! This is an absolutely typical situation. And when such a girl eventually makes a fire from a piece of iron and stone, builds a fire, cuts down the first dead wood for this fire and, at first, the ridiculous smooth “splashes” with an ax by the end of the day become sharp and strong prudent blows - this, I will tell you, is a special feeling ! Just fall in love! Even her gaze changes. This is a self-confident person who can do a lot and a lot. And ready to do almost anything.
Or another example: the girl, even after the third explanation, is completely unable to understand what the azimuth is and what the map and compass have to do with it. Complete stupor and rejection in the head. You propose to go through the same route on another day on your own, calmly remembering what was being told and shown to her now. And after a few days you get an SMS: “Hurrah! I understand! Passed all the points in half an hour! Herself! Thanks!!!" I think it's just great! I really love my job for moments like this.
- What is the final goal of this course?
In my opinion, it is formulated very simply: gaining self-confidence. It is self-confidence that is why people come to such courses. And basic knowledge and skills are just a tool to achieve such confidence.
A confident person is less afraid of the unknown, in a critical situation he acts more reasonably and positively. And, in the end, has a much better chance of saving his life and helping those he wants to take care of.
This is what I work for.
