International competition in English london. Extra-curricular event in English country-specific quiz "from london to ny". IV International Music Competition
Russian teenagers in April 2018 will go to London for International Olympiad for schoolchildren in English BEO (British English Olympics). Organization of student participation best schools Russia in the International Olympiad for schoolchildren - BEO 2018 - is a joint project of Oxfordcrown and the League of Education.
Within 2 weeks, teams of schoolchildren aged 12-16 from 20 countries with high level proficiency in English will compete for prizes in competitions for conducting debates, theatrical arts, vocals, dances, and sports.
Oxfordcrown CEO Olga Nikolaeva spoke with Minister Counselor to the British Ambassador to Russia Jonathan Brenton about the importance of foreign languages and the participation of Russian schoolchildren in the London 2018 Olympics (British English Olimpics).
- Mr. Brenton, what can you, as a representative of the highest diplomatic corps, say about the importance of foreign languages in the work of a diplomat?
Once my senior colleagues told me: if you want to buy something, then you can speak any language, but if you want to sell, then, of course, you need to speak the language of the buyer. This may be a rough comparison, but it is true. When I worked in Belgium and did not speak Flemish, there were quite a few problems in my work. Therefore, for any diplomat, knowledge of languages is a priority, it is not always easy for us, but we try.
- It is clear that the role of a foreign language for the profession of a diplomat is extremely great, but why do people of other professions need to know a foreign language if their profession has nothing to do with the language?
It is difficult to imagine a profession in which there is no place for a foreign language. Well, for example, you play football professionally. You were invited to a Brazilian team, for example, how will you understand the coach? And if you are engaged in science, how to communicate with colleagues from different countries without knowing the language?
Doctors study medical literature, and not always the most recent and necessary articles have a translation. Businessmen enter into contracts with partners around the world. Even a foreign tourist can turn to a traffic police officer with a question or a request for help.
If you think that it is enough to know one foreign language, then it makes sense to choose English. English is a bridge, it is an opportunity to open up the whole world. A Chinese and a Russian communicate in English, because English -international language. It seems that Bismarck said that in the future people should know two foreign languages and one of them should be English.
- And what is the importance of international forums, olympiads, forums for children, do they need to participate in such global events on a global scale, because they are still children?
I think that an important factor here will be that children find it interesting and fun at such events. And, of course, participation in such forums is useful. You can travel with English, you can meet other children, find friends from different countries, and it is quite exciting to participate in the competition, children love to compete.
- Our project, in addition to helping children get to know each other, also allows them to discuss the future of humanity in the format of a debate. And I must say that we, adults, are surprised at what a high level children do it. And I want to tell parents to let their children go to our Olympics, because this incredibly increases the motivation of children for self-development and communication with peers from all over the world. What can you say to parents who may not yet fully realize the importance of such an event?
If parents could see their children discussing global issues in a foreign language with representatives of different countries, would be proud of their children.
It is very important for the formation of the character of the child. If you want your child to become an entrepreneur or just a successful person, he needs to be able to speak, inspire confidence, be able to talk with a group of people. And participation in forums contributes to the acquisition of these skills. And thinking in a foreign language is very useful for brain development, this is a well-known fact.
- We give a whole range of tasks to teachers so that they prepare their team, and we believe that for a teacher this is a kind of professional development, because the materials of the Olympiad are developed taking into account world experience, and it makes sense to study and apply it in practice. And teachers often say that this is an additional burden. What do you think teachers gain when they bring their students to such large forums?
I understand that the profession of a teacher is difficult, a teacher always has a lot of work and maybe this is an additional burden, but this is also an investment in the future of children. For children, participating in an international event is a new experience that leads to increased motivation for further learning. Previously, the child sat and looked at the textbook without enthusiasm, but returned with new interest, with inspiration, it is easier and more interesting for the teacher to work with such a child, it seems to me that it is worth the effort of the teacher.
- Yes, this is an additional pride for the teacher, and if the group wins ...
Ooooh, this is, of course, a big bonus and for the school it's SUPER! Both for the teacher and for the school!
- What would you wish the Russian children, because they will go to this Olympics for the first time?
I wish them good luck, enjoy their participation, and also wish them to get to know the UK, make new friends from different countries and just get vivid impressions.

Maps were made long before reading and writing were invented. The earliest map that we know of is a cave painting in the Lascaux caves in France. The painting shows a part of the summer night's sky 16,500 years ago. Modern astronomers can still understand the night sky shown in the map. A four thousand year old map made by the Babylonians is still in existence. Many ancient map-makers thought that the world was flat, but explorers like Magellan in the 15th century sailed around the world and helped to make better maps. Besides, measurements taken by satellites show that our planet is slightly pear shaped. Satellites have also provided more accurate information and have helped to see and map parts of the world that were little known or never seen by humans before. Satellites have photographed the Amazon rainforest and have shown that the area the size of twenty football pitches is being cut down every minute. Pictures taken from space have also shown that one of the world's largest areas of inland water, the Aral Sea, has been shrinking very quickly. Modern satellite maps show the effects of global warming and pollution and help us to understand the world around us better. More and more drivers nowadays rely on satellite navigation in their cars so the traditional road maps may not be around much longer.

Acquaintance with the culture of the country of the language being studied is one of the priority tasks of teaching foreign languages. The specificity of the subject implies the mastery of communicative competence by students. All this is impossible without the involvement of a cultural component. Studying the culture of another country, along with the means of language, not only effectively engages students in the "dialogue of cultures", introduces them to universal values, replenishes "background knowledge", but also provides great opportunities for providing students with cognitive motivation.
Lessons in the form of a game, competitions, quizzes, competitions are always attractive, they help to activate previously learned material, consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired by students. The desire to measure oneself, to test knowledge in competition with friends, the opportunity to learn something new gives such lessons a motivated character.
