Koh lipe island thailand on the map. Koh Lipe is truly a piece of paradise on the edge of Thailand. How to get to Lipe Island from Krabi
Koh Lipe Island in Satun Province, Thailand is perhaps the most pleasant place for connoisseurs of leisurely and calm beach holiday. Excellent and clean beaches, excellent diving and snorkeling, and at the same time a sufficient distance from the main package tourist flows - these are the main features of the island of Koh Lipe.
A good idea to “get stuck” on Lipa is to combine business with pleasure - to go and then arrange a long beach relaxation for yourself.
When is the best time to go to Koh Lipe
The best weather in Lipa is from December to March. Nevertheless, you can come here from October 20th. The season from October 20 to November 16 and from April 1 to May 16 is considered low. At this time the most low prices but it may rain and the sea is rough.
It should be borne in mind that the island is small and there is little housing, so hotels for December and January must be booked in advance (6 or more months in advance).
How to get to Koh Lipe on your own
You can get to Lipe Island from Phuket, Phi Phi, Lanta, Langkawi, etc. - it depends on where you are coming from. From Bangkok, you first need to get to the nearest pier, and then sail by sea to Lipe.
There are no airports on Lipa, you can only get there by sea, and besides, not in any month. Navigation in this water area begins on October 19 and ends on May 16.
In the photo: ferry to Koh Lipe at Hat Yao Pier
If you are flying from Europe, then the route will be something like this: flight to Bangkok - flight to Hat Yai - bus to the pier - ferry or boat on Lipa. In fact, everything is much simpler than it seems.
The easiest option is to buy a single ticket on the website from Bangkok immediately with a transfer to Koh Lipe. Then you just get on a plane in Bangkok, and then you will be accompanied everywhere, all the way to the island.
Important! Please note that in Bangkok, AirAsia planes fly from Don Muang Airport (this is NOT the airport you will fly into from Russia, Ukraine or Europe). Until this airport still need to. Therefore, it will be too tiring to get from Europe to Koh Lipe in 1 day. It is better to at least spend the night in Bangkok.
Buying a ticket to Koh Lipe looks like this: in the “where” field, look for “Thailand (Island Transfer)” and select “Lipe”.
You will first fly to Hat Yai, then you will be taken to the port and put on a ferry to Koh Lipe. The whole journey will take from 6 to 9 hours. Along the way you will be accompanied by employees of the company. Everything is simple, clear and understandable.
How to get to Lipe on your own, without a transfer
Most tourists travel to Koh Lipe either by ferry from the Malay island of Langkawi, or from Thailand, using the combined bus-ferry tickets that are sold at any travel agency throughout Thailand. To decide from which places it is better to get to Koh Lipe, see the map:
I'll tell you more:
How to get from Penang (Malaysia) to Koh Lipe
1. First by ferry to Langkawi, price 70RM, 3 hours ride.
2. Then transfer from Langkawi to the ferry to Koh Lipe, price 118RM, ride 1.5 hours. It is better to leave Langkawi from the Telaga pier.
A single ticket can be bought at the box office in Penang.
How to get from Bangkok to Koh Lipe
1. Fly to one of the nearest airports - Krabi or Hat Yai.
2. Next, by bus or minivan, get to the piers of Pak Bara or Hat Yao.
3. Then another transfer by ferry or boat.
Prices depend on the route and the chosen transport, for example, the approximate price of Krabi Airport - Koh Lipe (ferry + minivan) is 1400 baht / person. Speedboats are more expensive.
How to get from Phuket to Koh Lipe
Many tourists travel to Lipe Island directly by boat, speedboat or ferry. However, this option is only for those who tolerate pitching well. Long and painful.
A direct ticket can be bought in Phuket at any travel agency right on the street.
In the photo: disembarkation of tourists from the boat. Lipe Island
By the way, there is no berth on Lipa, so at the very last stage you will have to transfer from the ferry to small boats - longtails, followed by disembarkation into the water. So prepare 50 baht each and take care of good shoes and cameras :)
The quietest months on the island of Lipe are October and April. In other months there are many tourists.
The beaches of Koh Lipe
As elsewhere in Thailand, Koh Lipe does not have a single ring beach along which it would be possible to bypass the entire island. There are only three large beaches on Lipa - Sunrise, Sunset and Pattaya. And a few smaller ones that can only be reached by boat. The beaches are somewhat similar - the sand is clean and white everywhere, the entrance to the water is gentle. However, there are differences, which is what experienced tourists use. So, look at the map of Ko Lipe.
Lipe looks like a horseshoe on the map
Pattaya Beach is primarily a transshipment base. Crews of tourists come and go here, the Thai immigration office and several large hotels are also located here. The beach is long and clean, and quite suitable for swimming, however, this is not Bounty, if you know what I mean :)

Sunset is the most picturesque and "wild" beach of Koh Lipe. There are steep slopes, there are more stones along the coast and, accordingly, fewer boats.
In the photo: the end of Sunset beach on Koh Lipe
Sunrise Beach is perhaps the most balanced. There is enough space for everyone - both beachgoers and boats.

Sunrise has the best beach bars where you can spend your evenings chatting with friends, listening to music and drinking Chang.

Diving and snorkeling in Lipa

Lipe Island is located on the territory of the Koh Tarutao National Park, so the surrounding water area is just perfect for good diving. The surrounding coral reefs abound in many species tropical fish, you can also admire turtles, barracudas and dolphins. Beginner divers should take study tours to the neighboring islands of Sawang and Chabang. The most advanced diving companies are Adang Sea Divers and Ko Lipe Castaway Divers.
If you are looking for budget accommodation, most likely you will stay in the center of the island, in one of the guesthouses around the local Walking Street. Noisy, but close to the whole tourist crowd: cafes, bars, shopping. One of the freshest hotels and inexpensive - "A Plus Deluxe Hotel". See prices and book

Hotels on the west coast of Lipe Island (especially on the hills) are quieter and with great views from the rooms, but they have their own problem - nightly transport - either constantly call the local "taxi" or walk, which is inconvenient in the dark.
In the photo: view from the window at the Mountain Resort hotel on the island of Lipe
If the main purpose of the holiday is diving, it is best to settle in one of the authentic resorts of Sunrise Beach, like Adang Sea Divers & Eco Lodge- simple, but very cheap. Here you can spend more time among fellow submariners, train with equipment, and loading onto boats will be more optimal for you.

Comfortable hotels in Ko Lipe
The most luxurious hotels on the island are definitely Serendipity Resort, Mali Resort and the modern Idyllic Concept Resort. If your budget allows, be sure to stay in one of them!

During the calm sea season (October 20 to May 15) there is a sea connection between Ko Lipe and other islands of the Andaman Sea - speed boats who can take you to Koh Lipe from Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Muk and Kradan. Using such a speedboat, you can move from one island to another, taking turns resting on any island you like along the route.
My advice: when buying tickets, choose a transport company that is famous for new boats, trained staff and punctuality.

Koh Lipe and neighboring islands in Satun Province
Koh Lipe, one of the most beautiful Thai islands, is located in the extreme south of Thailand, a few kilometers from the border with Malaysia.
The popularity of the island of Lipe came relatively recently, and 30 years ago no one knew about the existence of the island of Lipe, with the exception of sea gypsies and local residents.
The first European tourists appeared on the island of Lipe at the turn of the 80s and 90s of the last century, and were amazed by the unearthly beauty of the beach located in the southern part of the island, the beach that later received the name.
Despite the fabulous beauty of this place, the mass pilgrimage of tourists to Lipe Island had to wait quite a long time. Only in the early 2000s, with the development of cheap air travel and low-cost sea transport, did Lipe become a truly popular tourist destination.
With the beginning of mass tourism, the mass development of the island of Lipe began, which, according to many vacationers, hit hard on the beauty of the island. This sad fact really takes place, but you need to understand that not only Lipe Island is being built up, but the whole of Thailand as a whole. And against the backdrop of such places as Phuket and Pattaya, Lipe Island, as it was a fabulous island ten years ago, remains so now, despite the massive development.

Below are two maps: a map of the Adang archipelago (it includes the island of Lipe), and a map of the islands of the southern Andaman Sea, indicating the routes of the ships.
Click on the preview to get a high resolution image of the map you need.
Lipe Island is located 70 kilometers from the coastline of the Thai province of Satun and 20 kilometers. from the Malaysian border.
The nearest airport to Lipe Island, which receives planes from Bangkok, is located near the city of Hat Yai. Several airlines fly on the Bangkok - Hat Yai route, including low cost carriers AirAsia and Nok Air. The cost of tickets for this route varies widely, and starts from 1200 baht. This price can be obtained if you pay for the ticket a few months before departure. When buying a ticket a few days before departure, the price can significantly exceed 2000 baht.
At Hat Yai Airport, you can buy a combined transfer to Lipe Island, which includes a trip by minibus to Pakbara Pier and then, by speedboat, to Lipe Island. The cost of such a transfer is 900 baht (at the beginning of 2019). Travel time is ~2 hours from the airport to Pakbara Pier, and ~2 hours from the pier to Lipe Island.
If the cost of air tickets seems excessive to you, you can go from Bangkok to Hat Yai by train. The cost of train tickets, as of January 2019, started at 149 baht for a seat in an unair-conditioned 3rd class carriage. Tickets for more comfortable 2nd and 1st class carriages cost 345 baht and 734 baht, respectively.
Trips to Lipe Island from the neighboring islands of the Andaman Sea
It is easy to combine a visit to Lipe Island with a tour of the rest of the islands of the southern Andaman Sea.
All the islands listed here are worth not only to look at them from the ship, but also to spend some time on them. On all the islands, except for, there are hotels, quality beaches are everywhere, and, importantly, all these islands are very different from each other. So, if you have the time, it's a good idea to spend a day or two on each of the islands and see their unique beauty with your own eyes.
The best beaches of Lipe Island
On the island of Lipe there are two long, more than one kilometer long beaches, Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach, as well as many small beaches, with a characteristic length of 100 - 200 meters, most of which are located in the north of the island.
Of the two largest and most famous beaches, the beach is in the best condition, and, despite the fact that it is quite densely built up along its entire length, it does not give the impression of an overly congested place.
Unlike Sunrise Beach, the beach, which was once considered the most beautiful beach on Lipe Island, suffered greatly from developers and local boaters who privatized a good half of the beach for boat parking, and as a result, no one is perceived as the best beach on Lipe Island.
The small beaches of Lipe Island are not yet as heavily built up as Sunrise and Pattaya Beach, and not as popular as these two beaches. Many of the smaller beaches do not even have established names, and this leads to rather curious situations. In particular, on the island of Lipe there are two beaches with the same name, which, however, is not surprising to anyone, since most of the tourists simply do not reach the beaches of Sunset. And it doesn’t come out of laziness, but because the small beaches of the northern part of the island (namely, both Sunset beaches are located there) have never been considered especially beautiful place, and attracted tourists with exceptionally low housing prices, one and a half to two times lower than on the two main beaches of the island of Lipe.
Read more about the beaches of Lipe Island. Sunrise Beach, Pattaya Beach and Sunset Beaches
Sunrise Beach is the most beautiful beach on the island of Lipe, the main advantages of which are a surprisingly calm and relaxing atmosphere, perfect white coral sand and very high-quality snorkeling in coastal waters. Sunrise Beach is located in the eastern part of Lipe Island; The length of the beach is almost 2 km.; the distance from Sunrise Beach to Pattaya Beach, another popular beach on Lipe Island, is just under one kilometer. The main attraction of Sunrise Beach is the amazingly beautiful sandy spit, ..... |
Pattaya Beach - 10 years ago it was considered the most beautiful beach on the island of Lipe, but at the present moment it is more correct to call it simply the center of the evening life of the island. Regrettably, the same thing happened to Pattaya Beach that happened to others not so long ago beautiful places Thailand, for example, what happened at the end of the first decade of our century with the beaches of Tonsai and Lo Dalam on the islands of Phi Phi. If you try to describe in one word the misfortune that happened to Pattaya Beach, then for this it is best to use the English term overdeveloped. And if you try to describe the situation in more detail, you have to say that on the beach ..... |
In the north of the island of Lipe there are several small, 100 - 200 meters long beaches, which have not yet been fully developed by the tourism business. These beaches do not have a definitive name, and they are usually called Sunset Beaches. It can be said for sure that there are at least two beaches with the name Sunset on Lipe Island, the one that is located immediately behind the Sunrise Beach, and is separated from it by a small rocky ridge, and the one where the hotel with the strange name Porn Resort is located . Of all the northern beaches, these two beaches are the most densely built up with guesthouses and resorts, while the rest of the northern beaches are still in..... |
Lipe island hotels. Choosing a hotel on the island of Lipe.
Almost all residential buildings on the island of Lipe are detached bungalows and cottages.
There are no high-rise hotels on the island of Lipe, and this is a big plus of the island, because, unlike large buildings, small bungalows and cottages can be placed right at the water's edge.
It is in such beach-front bungalows and cottages, located just a few meters from the surf line, that it is worth living on the island of Lipe.
The prices for such housing are high, but in this case it is worth forking out, especially since, despite all its high cost, this housing will not punch a tangible hole in your budget.
This thesis seems paradoxical, however, there is no paradox here, and everything is explained by the fact that Lipe Island is not one of those places where people live for weeks. And if you, like most tourists, come to Lipe Island for 3-4 days, then the total surcharge for a good location of housing will be from a thousand to several thousand baht. Moreover, these several thousand can arise only in one case, if you settle in housing of the highest price category.
Cost of living on Lipe Island
Even 15 years ago, Lipe Island was one of the cheapest places in Thailand, a place where you could easily settle for 100 - 200 baht per day, however, those days have long since sunk into oblivion.
At the moment, the island of Lipe is not cheap, the cost of accommodation in most hotels on the island exceeds 1000 baht per day, but at the same time, the remnants of the former cheapness are still present.
Firstly, if you are not too attached to comfort, you can still find housing on Lipe Island in the price range of ~ 500 baht per day. For this money, you can rent a traditional Thai bungalow made of bamboo and palm branches on Lipe Island. There will be practically nothing inside such a bungalow, but electricity and a bathroom, at the same time, will be present.
Secondly, the cost of food and drinks in bars and restaurants, as well as prices in stores, on the island of Lipe do not go beyond reasonable. In particular, it is not the slightest difficulty to find restaurants where the cost of dishes will be noticeably lower than 100 baht. Prices in the shops and stores of Lipe Island are also moderate and do not differ much from the prices of the well-known 7/11 chain, whose stores are also present on the island.
Thirdly, the prices for boat trips and transfers on the island of Lipe are low, and in some cases, frankly cheap. For example, a trip from Lipe Island to the neighboring one will cost you only 100 baht per person.
It is worth noting that the high cost of Lipe Island relates mainly to the cost of staying in hotels, and if you are not ready to live in a shed of palm branches, then it is safe to say that the cost of living will be the main item of your expenses.
Snorkeling on Lipe Island. Underwater world of Lipe island.
Snorkeling in the vicinity of Lipe Island can be estimated at a solid 4 points.
Langkawi Island is the largest Malaysian resort, and this status is confirmed by more than 200 hotels located on the island, an airport and a developed network of high-quality roads.
The main attractions of the island of Langkawi are several good (but not great) beaches, an impressive cable car that can climb cliffs 700 meters high, and mangroves with an abundance of various living creatures, which you can and should ride on a sightseeing boat.
Trips from Lipe to Langkawi and back are not fraught with the slightest difficulty. In the high season, boats run regularly between the islands, the trip takes about an hour, Russians do not need to apply for visas in advance, and border formalities are not tiring and do not take much time.
The island (, less often -) is located in the extreme south of Thailand, 20 km. from the coastline of Satun Province and 50 km. from Lipe Island.
There are four islands of Boulogne in total. In addition to the island of Bulon Lae, these are the islands of Bulon Rang, Bulon Don and Bulon Maipai. The islands of Boulogne are located quite compactly, and the distance between them does not exceed 10 km. from each other.
Of all the four islands, the tourism industry has mastered only one island, the island of Boulogne Lae, and when they simply talk about the island of Boulogne, without specifying which one, they mean this particular island.
Despite its relatively small size, 1.5 km. x 1 km., the island of Boulogne Lae is quite densely populated. The island has about 10 hotels and guesthouses, as well as a village of local residents, with a mosque, a school, and other rural infrastructure.
The island of Bulon Lae has become popular quite recently, and its popularity was a direct consequence of the changes that have occurred on the island of Lipe. The massive and uncontrolled development of Lipe Island has led to the fact that those tourists who visited Lipe Island for the sake of the amazingly beautiful and untouched nature of civilization began to avoid this island and look for new places where there are no crowds of people and nature is still in its original state. And located near the island of Lipe, the island of Boulogne Lae, with its wooden huts and a patriarchal lifestyle, turned out to be most welcome, and quite consistent with their tastes.
Tarutao Island and Tarutao National Park Islands
(Koh) - the largest and highest island of the national park of the same name, with dimensions exceeding 25 x 10 km., And a mountain height of about 700 meters.
Tarutao Island is a regular stop for ships sailing from Pakbara Pier to Lipe Island, and all those numerous tourists who get to Lipe Island through the city of Hat Yai have the opportunity to see Tarutao Island with their own eyes.
At the same time, there are not so many who want not only to look at the island of Tarutao from the ship, but also to get to know it better and spend several days on the island, and the reasons for this state of affairs are quite clear.
On the island of Tarutao, unlike the island of Lipe, there is no commercial housing (hotels, resorts and guesthouses), but only a tent city and a few spartan-looking cottages owned by the national park administration. Bars, restaurants and nightlife on the island of Tarutao there is also none, and those tourists who go to the island of Lipe for the sake of entertainment bypass the island of Tarutao.
However, if you are not afraid of domestic inconveniences and the lack of evening life, a couple of days spent on the island of Tarutao may well give you pleasure. The nature on the island of Tarutao is gorgeous, the beaches are deserted, there are no cities and villages on the island, but at the same time, there are several high-quality roads, and you can move around the island both on foot and along the coast by boat. In addition, the island has waterfalls, caves and viewpoints that offer impressive views of the beaches, hills, mountains, and islands located in the distance. So the question of what to do on the island of Tarutao, none of the tourists who came there, will not arise.
Brief description of the most notable islands of Tarutao National Park (Tarutao)
Below are short descriptions most interesting islands Tarutao National Park, with the exception of the islands of Lipe, Adang and Tarutao, which are described in much more detail.
Kai Island (Koh Khai) is a small island located halfway between the islands of Lipe and Tarutao. It is known, first of all, thanks to the unusual stone arch, which has become a symbol of the Tarutao National Park. The snow-white beaches of Kai Island are also good, as are the coral reefs located next to the island in shallow water. There are at least two islands with the name "Koh Khai" in Thailand. The second one is located next to Phuket Island, and is a standard stop for excursions from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands. Obviously, these two islands should not be confused. |
Ravi Island (Koh Rawi) is the twin brother of Adang Island, just as vast and just as high, but at the same time, located at some distance from Lipe Island (the distance between the islands is about 7 kilometers). Like Adang Island, Ravi Island is almost devoid of flat areas, however, despite this, Ravi Island has some very decent beaches. It can also be noted that the coral reefs in the area of Ravi Island are located just a few meters from the beaches, and Ravi Island is popular with snorkelers. |
Dong Island (Koh Dong, sometimes Koh Tong) is the third largest island of the Adang archipelago, the farthest island of the archipelago from Lipe Island, located at a distance of 10 km. from Lipe Island. Unlike the two largest islands of the archipelago, Adang Island and Ravi Island, Dong Island is flatter and rather densely populated by local residents. Dong Island is a standard stop for island tours around Lipe Island, and its main attraction is the countless monkeys (long-tailed macaques) living on the island. |
Hin Son IslandHin Son Island is a small island located at a distance of about 8 km. from Lipe Island. It is a heap of stone blocks of a rather unusual shape. If you have ever seen with your own eyes, then looking at the island of Hin Son, you will surely remember Sail Rock, business card Similan. Hin Son Island is almost never a travel destination on its own, and is usually visited along with 5-6 other islands, including the nearby large islands of Ravi and Dong. |
Lugoi islandLugoi Island is another small island among the many smaller islands south of Dong Island. It is notable for clear light blue water, a tiny pretty beach and excellent snorkeling in coastal waters. It should be noted that snorkeling in the area of Lugoi Island, as well as in the area of other small islands of the Adang archipelago, is noticeably better than near Lipe Island. The water here is clearer, corals are more diverse, including such hits of the underwater world as gorgonians (sea fans) and soft corals. |
Hin Ngam IslandHin Ngam Island is a small island located 3 kilometers north of Lipe Island. Hin Ngam Island is quite different from the rest of the islands in the Adang archipelago, and this difference lies in the fact that the beaches on Hin Ngam Island are pebbly, not sandy, as on all other islands. These pebbles, large, perfectly polished and pitch black, are the main attraction of this island. Like other smaller islands, Hin Ngam is rarely a travel destination in its own right, and is usually visited in conjunction with several neighboring islands. |

Boarding boats at Pakbara Pier
But there is no pier on Koh Lipe, in the low season or with strong waves in the sea, boats arrive at the shore on, and in the high season - on. Some speedboats (including ours) are parked near the shore, and some boats are further from the shore, and transported to the beach on longtails for 50 baht per person.
Landing on the island of Koh Lipe
Loading and unloading luggage is still a circus: things are thrown right over the water and it seems that the suitcase is about to fall into the sea, so do not let valuables be loaded into the boat, but keep them with you! Luggage is packed at the stern, and in some places even on the roof of the boat, so that the suitcase may arrive wet and dirty ...
How to get to Pakbara Pier
The nearest big cities to Pakbara village:
- Trang (not to be confused with the city of Trat, which is near)
- Hat Yai
And here and there there is an airport, bus stations, and even a railway station in Hat Yai! You can get to Pakbara Pier by:
- Taxi. A car from these two cities to the Pakbara pier will cost 1800 - 2200 baht, the approximate travel time is an hour and a half
- Minibase. From the bus station Hat Yai there is a mini bass, the cost is 150 baht, travel time is one and a half to two hours
- By purchasing a combined ticket. For example, upon arrival at Hat Yai airport, we bought a complex ticket for minibus + boat: airport - Pakbara pier - Koh Lipe for 900 baht per person. It is better to buy such a ticket in advance on this site, firstly it will be cheaper (~ 700 baht), and secondly, you will not have to wait long at the airport until tourists from other flights are collected.
The same complex ticket (mini bass + boat) can be bought at the Hat Yai railway station, at the bus station, at any travel agency and hotel.

Boat timetable
Important: to get to Koh Lipe on the same day, you need to get to Hai Yat until 13:00, but earlier is better! I would not count on 100% for the boat, which is scheduled at 15:30 ... You can spend the night in the city of Hat Yai, there are many inexpensive hotels.
How to get to Koh Lipe from Trang
If you flew to Trang, then the nearest pier to the city is Trang Hat Yao Pier, from which Tiger Line Ferry boats depart daily during the high season at 13:00. Travel time 2 hours. You can buy tickets on the carrier's website.
how to get to koh lipe from bangkok
To get to Koh Lipe, you must first get to one of the above cities: Trang or Hat Yai, then drive to Pakbara Pier and buy a boat ticket to Koh Lipe. How to do this is described above in the article. And you can get to Trang or Hat Yai from Bangkok like this:
1. By plane from Bangkok: choose the best and most suitable flight option for you in time and cost to Hat Yai or Trang.
2. By bus. Buses Bangkok - Hat Yai depart from the southern bus station in Bangkok (Sai Tai Mai or Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal). Buses run quite often from 6 am to 8 pm, travel time is 13-14 hours.
The cost depends on the carrier and bus class: from 700 to 1000 baht.
3. By train Bangkok - Hat Yai. Trains depart from Hua Lamphong Railway Station in Bangkok. Travel time 13-17 hours (+ trains in Thailand tend to be late!). In order to get to Ko Lipe on the same day, you need to take trains that depart from Bangkok at 15:10 or 15:30.
The cost is from 300 baht (in third class carriages), we usually take air-conditioned second class tickets, the cost is from 850 baht.
You can view the train schedule in Thailand on the Thailand Railways website, and buy tickets or at the railway station.

4. Having bought a complex ticket airplane + minibus + boat
One of the most convenient ways to get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok is to buy a complex ticket from Air Asia or Nok Air. The ticket includes a flight from Bangkok to Hat Yai, a minibus ride to Pakbara Pier and a boat/ferry to Koh Lipe. Flights are only in the morning.

We got to Koh Lipe just from I thought for a very long time how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket. I decided to choose a sea route 🙂 I immediately dismissed speedboats (still, I couldn’t stand 4-5 hours in such a high-speed boat, even an hour and a half was enough for me 🙂), I wanted to sail on the Tiger Line Ferry, for some reason I imagined such a big ferry , the same as or like us 🙂
But, after reading the reviews, I realized that it’s better to choose another option how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket 🙂 In the reviews, people complained about the old boat and frequent long delays, they wrote that the boat didn’t take 4 hours, as stated, but almost twice longer! After reading the reviews, I decided to choose another way to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket, namely the more standard way through Hat Yai and Pakbaru.
Option 2: via Hat Yai and Pakbara
By bus
From Phuket to Hat Yat can be reached by bus. Buses run from 6 am to 9:45 pm, travel time is about 8 hours, the cost is from 300 to 600 baht, depending on the class of the bus. Tickets can be bought at the bus station in Phuket Town or on the website.
It is best to travel by night bus VIP 24, which leaves at 21:45 and arrives in Hat Yai around 6 am. Then transfer to the pier and on the first boat at 9:30 to Koh Lipe. Then you will be on the island around 11:00 - 11:30 and still have a whole day ahead!
By plane
Bangkok Air direct flight from Phuket to Hat Yai. Departure at 7:25, arrival at 8:30. Quite recently there was also an evening flight at 19:25, but at the moment I do not see it in the schedule. The cost is about 1700 baht, including luggage and even breakfast on board 🙂 Check the cost and buy tickets Phuket - Hat Yai >>
We chose this option how to get to Koh Lipe from Phuket. Everything went smoothly: at 5:30 in the morning we ordered a taxi to our condo, at 6:15 we were already at Phuket airport, checked in our luggage, drank coffee in a coffee shop, loaded into a small plane, had breakfast 🙂 We arrived in Hat Yai even earlier than the time indicated in schedule.

Breakfast on the plane
I wanted to buy tickets for the transfer airport - pier - Koh Lipe in advance online on the site (it turned out cheaper), but while I was wondering if we would have time for the minibus, which leaves at 9 am (we would have had time and even with a large margin), ticket sales stopped (Tickets can be purchased online no later than three days in advance). Therefore, we found a tour agency at the airport, where we bought a mini-bass + speedboat complex ticket. But we had to wait more than an hour for passengers from other flights.
We were at the Pakbara pier at 11:15, where the purchased tickets must be exchanged for numbers for boarding the boat (the numbers are very convenient - there is no queue). We sailed instead of the promised 11:30 at 12:00, and arrived at Ko Lipe at 14:00 - due to the storm and rain that started along the way, the boat sailed more slowly and arrived at Sunrise Beach, and not at the opposite beach. It was even more convenient for us: our hotel was literally a few steps from the place where the boat arrived 🙂
Hurray, it's our turn to load into the boat 🙂
In the boat we are waiting for the departure to Koh Lipe
How to get to Lipe Island from Krabi
From Krabi, you can get to Koh Lipe via Hat Yai. There are no direct flights from Krabi to Hat Yai, and in my opinion, it is not advisable to fly through Bangkok, so you can get there by bus, minibus or taxi. The distance to the pier is only about 300 km.
Minibus tickets to Hat Yai from will cost 350 - 400 baht, a complex ticket Ao Nang (Krabi) - Koh Lipe - 1000 - 1200 baht. You can buy at any travel agency or hotel.

In the high season, boats run on the route Langkawi - Lipe and Lipe - Langkawi. On the island of Koh Lipe, there are even immigration offices where passport control is carried out.

Boats / boats from Langkawi arrive at Pattaya Beach on Lipe (read about all the beaches of Koh Lipe). They depart from two piers to Langkawi:
- from the Kauh Jetty pier (in the capital of the island of Kuah, near the symbol of the city of the eagle)
- from the Telaga Harbor pier, which is located next to the Oriental Village park
We sailed in the opposite direction (i.e. from Lipe to Langkawi) and I specifically chose the carrier whose boats arrive at the Telaga pier, because. first of all, she planned to check into the Geopark Hotel in Langkawi, visit the Oriental Village, the Sky bridge and the neighboring waterfall, which are a few minutes drive from this pier.

On the island of Koh Lipe in Thailand
Koh Lipe: general information
Koh Lipe island- a small island in southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea in the province of Satun, located near Malaysia (the nearest Malaysian island of Langkawi is only 30 km away). Koh Lipe on the map
Ko Lipe is part of the Tarutao Marine National Park, for which you have to pay 200 baht per person (do not throw away tickets, they will come in handy if you go on a tour of the neighboring islands, and even before leaving the island we were required to show tickets!).
The island of Koh Lipe became known among tourists relatively recently: some 40 years ago it was inhabited by sea gypsies from Malaysia, and the first European tourists appeared in the 90s of the last century.
Koh Lipe: Sunrise Beach
I was lucky enough to visit Koh Lipe in Thailand in 2006 and catch a small piece of paradise deserted beaches, one store in the center of the island and Pooh Bar - the only place on Koh Lipe where there was internet 🙂 And in general, all Europeans gathered every evening in this bar for dinner and beer 🙂 There were no concrete roads on the island of Koh Lipe, everywhere there was sand, and before entering any room, you had to take off your shoes, and in general, shoes were not needed on the island - everyone went barefoot everywhere.
Koh Lipe in 2006
A couple of years later, the total development of the island began, the first large hotels appeared (some of them even with a pool), old wooden bungalows were also reconstructed, and a little later Koh Lipe was connected by sea to Langkawi, an immigration office appeared on the beach to go through passport control upon arrival from Malaysia and departure from Thailand. A little later, the central street was concreted - this is how the walking street appeared.

Volkin Street: the main street was concreted and a walking street appeared with shops, cafes, bars
Roads almost all over the island were put in order
Although there are still clay and sandy roads on the island, and on the way to Sunrise Beach there are deposits of garbage
Pointers in the center of the island
Houses of local residents
But there are also such huts of local residents that have not changed at all in 10 years ... The funny thing is that huge plasma TVs hang on the walls in such houses 🙂
Island locals
There are many well-groomed cats and dogs on the island.
Of course, the development of the tourist infrastructure of the island could not but lead to an increase in the flow of tourists and crowds, huge crowds of vacationers, poured onto Koh Lipe. For some reason, the Chinese especially fell in love with Lipe Island (every self-respecting Chinese wants to have a selfie with Koh Lipe and with 🙂). Yes, and there are enough other Asians now, especially Thais and Malaysians like to come to Lipe Island for holidays and weekends. There were times when there were so many tourists on the island that they did not fit in hotels, and people spent the night in tents on the beach!
According to rumors, travel agencies even tried to send our compatriots to Koh Lipe, and people were very unhappy with what hole they were sent into (and where are the entertainment and shopping centers, as in? 🙂)
But now, fortunately, the unhealthy excitement for the island has subsided, there are no our packages on Koh Lipe, but Chinese tourists come to in large numbers especially in winter for Chinese New Year.

Seasons and weather on Koh Lipe: when is the best time to go to the island
There are two main seasons on Koh Lipe:
- Rainy and stormy season: from April-May to October
- Dry season: November to April
Previously, the island was “closed” for the summer, due to severe storms in the sea, sea communication with the mainland almost completely stopped, hotel workers went on vacation 🙂 In recent years, communication with the island and the mainland of Thailand has not stopped all year round only reduced the number of flights. And the weather and climate are now so changeable that even in summer you can catch good sunny weather, and at the peak of the season get caught in the rain.
But hotel prices usually differ in three seasons:
- Low season: summer
- High season: October - November and March - April
- Peak season: December - February
When is the best time to go to the island?
The best weather on Koh Lipe is in winter, in December - February, but during this period there are a lot of tourists on the island and prices for everything, especially for accommodation, rise significantly. Summer is the rainy season, but deserted beaches and low hotel prices. In my opinion, the best time to visit Koh Lipe in Thailand is November and March-April.
The weather on the island depends on the seasons. best season in winter, but at this time there are a lot of tourists

Transport on the island: how to move
There are no big roads on the island of Lipe, there are no cars and few bikes (some locals ride bikes, but they don’t rent them to tourists 🙂)
Koh Lipe is a small island and you can move around it:
- on foot
- if necessary, take a motorbike taxi (this is a bike with a cart) for 50 baht per person one way or ride around the island for 400 baht / hour
- bicycles for rent - 200 baht per day.
- you can also move between the beaches by boat. But taxi boats on the island are not as common as, for example, on or in, because. almost all the beaches of the island of Koh Lipe can be easily walked

Hotels Koh Lipe: where to stay on the island
Every year more and more new hotels open on the island, but despite this, it can be a problem to find accommodation on the spot during the peak season. Therefore, I advise you to book Koh Lipe hotels in advance.
Most hotels in Ko Lipe are located right on the coastline, many bungalow-type hotels, although there are hotels with rooms in buildings.

A very popular hotel among Europeans

Prices for hotels in Koh Lipe are quite high:
- a double room in an average hotel on the beach will cost +/- 3000 baht
- cheap beach bungalows - from 1000 baht
Prices are for the high season, in summer housing is half the price. Perhaps you can find huts for 500 baht, for example, the houses in the photo below are right on the beach and belong to the Andaman Resort hotel. The cost was not known.

The beaches of Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe island in Thailand is famous for its gorgeous beaches. There are the following main beaches:
- Pattaya Beach
- Sunrise Beach
- Sunset Beach
- Karma Beach or north beach
- Beaches in the bays
Pattaya Beach
The most popular beach in Koh Lipe is Pattaya Beach. It is located in a bay in the south of the island. snow white White sand, clear sea, close to the shore coral reef with fishes. Good infrastructure, but sometimes it is noisy and crowded, especially when boats arrive with tourists from the mainland and Langkawi and in the evening before sunset. Details about Pattaya Beach:

Before the boats leave, the beach can be crowded
Before sunset, a crowd of vacationers also gather here 🙂
Sunrise Beach
Sunrise Beach is the second most popular beach on Koh Lipe. I loved it for its peace and quiet. The beach has white coarse sand, a good sharp entry into the sea. More about this beach here:
Sunrise Beach: South
Sunrise Beach: North
Central part of Sunrise Beach
Sunset Beach
Beach in the west of Koh Lipe. The sand is grayish, the entry into the sea is very smooth, there are many picturesque stones on the shore. To be honest, this beach did not impress me at all, maybe we were on it at the wrong time ...
Sunset beach in the west of the island
Karma Beach
Karma Beach or the beach next to the Mountain Resort Hotel is the northernmost beach of the island with a beautiful sandy spit (the spit is washed closer to winter, it may not be there in summer). The sand is very large, white, the sea is bright turquoise, a beautiful view of the neighboring island of Adang. There are often strong winds on this beach in winter. Read more here:

Infrastructure
The tourist infrastructure on the island is well developed. Of course, there are no large stores like Tesco and Big C on Lipe Island, but there are:
- two 7 elevens (in which for some reason there are eternal queues)
- small food shops
- shops with souvenirs and beachwear
- a huge variety of cafes and restaurants, which offer not only Thai cuisine and seafood, but also Indian and European food
- bars and coffee houses
- tents with pancakes, fruit shakes, ice cream
- massage parlors
- and even a beach club on Pattaya Beach 🙂
- several ATMs, currency exchange (the exchange rate is not favorable, it is better to come to Koh Lipe with baht in cash)
- tour agencies where you can buy a tour, tickets, exchange money, etc. etc.
- pharmacies
- hospital

Prices for Koh Lipe
We can say the following about the prices on Koh Lipe: there are expensive hotels, prices are 7 levs higher than on the mainland, expensive fruits, but the prices in the cafe are quite adequate, I would say even low for such a quality of food.
This is not the first time I have noticed a strange feature for myself: on small islands in Thailand, everything is usually more expensive, except for food in a cafe. So it was, for example, on Phi Phi - the island is not cheap, and the food in the cafe is not only tasty, but also inexpensive!
For example, our average bill for a beer dinner on Koh Lipe has never exceeded 500 baht (except for one evening when we went to dinner at an unlimited buffet at Progress restaurant).
Some prices on Koh Lipe:
- Water 1.5 l at 7 lev - 26 baht
- Yogurt - 21 baht
- Coffee in seven - 60 - 65 baht
- Ready meals in boxes at 7 leven (e.g. rice + meat) – 70 – 80 baht
- Beer Chang 0.6 in seven - 90 baht, in a small shop - 65 baht
- Packing of water 6 bottles of 1.5 liters in a shop - 100 baht
- Pancakes with different fillings ~ 40 - 70 baht
- Fish in a cafe ~ 240 baht
- Squid, shrimp in a cafe ~ 150 baht
- Tom yum ~ 120 - 150 baht
- Rice with meat or seafood ~ 80 baht
- Beef steak at the Steakhouse - 450 baht
- Coffee in a cafe ~ 70 - 90 baht
- Breakfast in a cafe - 200 - 300 baht

Things to do in Koh Lipe
Ko Lipe is an island for a relaxing beach holiday, there are no noisy parties, nightclubs or attractions here 🙂 The main attraction of Ko Lipe is its beaches, neighboring islands of the national park and undersea world. Therefore, the list of things to do on Koh Lipe is not so big:
- Visit and swim on all the beaches of the island
- Go snorkeling. Koh Lipe is the only place in Thailand where we have been where good snorkeling is near the shore
- go to
- Swim to the neighboring island of Adang
- Take a course at a diving school - excellent diving spots near Koh Lipe
- Eat - drink - sleep - go for a massage - relax 🙂

Koh Lipe reviews
You know, there are places on earth that sink into the soul at first sight. I had a similar situation with Ko Lipe 🙂 I fell in love with the island not even at first sight, but even earlier, when I read about it on the forum (if I'm not mistaken, it was in 2003). Soon my dream came true: I flew to Thailand. But for the first time, the route was simpler and did not include the island of Koh Lipe, but included - -.
A little later, I nevertheless got to Lipe and was completely delighted with this tropical paradise. Years passed, countries and beautiful islands alternated (what beauty is worth in the Philippines or the islands of Saraya and Kanawa in Indonesia), but the island of Koh Lipe in Thailand always remained in my memory and I knew that someday I would definitely return there 🙂 And I returned more than 10 years later!
Yes, the island has changed (but I read about it and this fact did not come as a shock to me), but I still like it the same way as before. Most likely for those who are looking for parties, shopping, etc. etc. it will be boring on Lipa (in this case it is better to go to Phuket), but it’s just right for us 🙂
Ko Lipe - my love for many years :)))
How many days to spend in Koh Lipe?
Many advise not to spend more than 3-4 days on the island of Koh Lipe in Thailand, but we spent almost a week on Lipe and did not want to leave at all. If you are traveling in Asia, then you can combine Koh Lipe with some more major island and city, for example routes can be the following:
- Bangkok – Phuket – Koh Lipe – – Bangkok
- Bangkok - Hat Yai - Koh Lipe - Langkawi - Kuala Lumpur
- Kuala Lumpur – – – Langkawi – Koh Lipe
And many other options 🙂 Enjoy your holiday!
