Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary- This is a great holiday, which is the first among the great twelfth non-passing holidays. It was established by the church in the 4th century. On this day, the birth of the One through whom Christ the Savior will come is celebrated. This holiday is celebrated - September 8 (21), as a day of universal joy.

According to legend, the parents of the Virgin Mary were the righteous Joachim, who came from the city of Nazareth in Galilee (northern Palestine), from the royal family of David, from the messianic "tribe" of Judah, and Anna - from Bethlehem, from the bishopric family of Aaron, from the priestly "tribe "Levi.
The Blessed Virgin Mary was born in the small Galilean city of Nazareth. The spouses were childless, since Saint Anna was barren. Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did not lose hope in God's mercy, firmly believing that everything is possible for God, and He can resolve Anna's infertility even in her old age, as He once resolved the infertility of Sarah, the wife of Patriarch Abraham. Saints Joachim and Anna vowed to consecrate to God for service in the temple a child that the Lord would send them. Childlessness was considered by the Jewish people as God's punishment for sins, therefore the holy and righteous Joachim and Anna endured unjust reproach from their compatriots. On one of the holidays, the elder Joachim brought his sacrifice to the Jerusalem temple as a gift to God, but the high priest did not accept it, calling Joachim unworthy, because of his childlessness. Saint Joachim, in deep grief, went into the desert and there with tears he prayed to the Lord for the gift of a child. Saint Anna, having learned what had happened in the Jerusalem temple, wept bitterly, but did not grumble at the Lord, but prayed, calling on her family the mercy of God. The Lord fulfilled their petition when the holy spouses reached an advanced age and prepared themselves by a virtuous life for a high title - to be the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the future Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Archangel Gabriel brought joyful news to Joachim and Anna: their prayers were heard by God, and the Blessed Daughter Mary would be born to them, through whom salvation would be given to the whole world. The Blessed Virgin Mary, with her purity and virtue, surpassed not only all people, but also the angels, she was the living temple of God, and, as the Church sings in festive hymns, "the Heavenly Door, introducing Christ into the Universe for the salvation of our souls" (2nd stichera on "Lord, I have cried," tone 6).
The Nativity of the Mother of God marked the onset of the time when the great and comforting promises of God about the salvation of the human race from the slavery of the devil began to be fulfilled. This event brought closer on earth the grace-filled Kingdom of God, the kingdom of truth, piety, virtue and immortal life.
From the first days of Mary's birth, Joachim and Anna tried to warm Her child's soul with warmth and kindness, and with everything that spoke to Her soul about God. When Mary was three years old, Joachim and Anna brought her to the Temple in Jerusalem, fulfilling a vow they had made to the Lord God. On this very day, the Church celebrates the feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos.
At present, the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos, which is still celebrated by the Church on September 8, has one day of celebration (September 7) and four days of afterfeast, as well as a celebration (September 12).
On the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, all Russian people necessarily went to holiday service to the temple. On this day, it was not recommended to perform any work. In many villages patronal feasts fell on this day. In addition, almost all over Russia at that time they celebrated “osporzhinki” - a harvest festival: they went to visit each other, father-in-law and mother-in-law were supposed to host the newlyweds. In the southern Russian provinces, it was customary to arrange "autumn" on this day: girls and women went to the river, lake, stream "to meet autumn", had a meal, the main dishes of which were oatmeal jelly and bread, sang songs, danced, played. It was the second meeting of the autumn, the first was at the Second Spas. Oat bread was specially baked, which was held by the eldest of the women, and the young ones sang songs, standing around her. Then the bread was broken into pieces according to the number of those gathered and fed to livestock.
Osenins coped for a whole week (in the church tradition, 6 days were allotted for the celebration of the Nativity of the Virgin, since this holiday had the day of the forefeast - September 7 (20) and four days after the feast).
The veneration of the Mother of God was embodied in the honoring of her on the days of the "Mother of God holidays" - the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Introduction, the Annunciation and the Assumption of the Mother of God, as well as on other days associated with events from the life of the Mother of God or glorifying her: the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos, i.e. a national solemn meeting for the glorification of the Mother of God (December 26 / January 8); The position of the honest robe of the Most Holy Theotokos in Blachernae, in a special temple built by Emperor Leo the Great in the 5th century.
