How to repair the roof of a country house
On the roofs of country cottages, in most cases, you can see the roofing, which was used to create asbestos-cement slate. When the roof of a country house is erected with his own hands, as in the photo, its owner, as a rule, prefers to purchase inexpensive and at the same time high-quality materials.
It meets these criteria. Its service life is approximately 30 years, but often it does not exceed two decades, after which it is necessary to repair the roof of a country house, which is not difficult and can be easily done independently.
The degree of damage to the country roof
Often, repairing the roof of a country house does not require a complete replacement of the entire coating; instead, it is limited to patching. In the event that such measures do not help and it is necessary to perform more efficient work on the roof, then the damaged sheets are replaced with new elements.
If the roof for a summer residence is leaking, then the slate, even with minor chips and cracks, must be replaced and at the same time make sure that there are no other reasons why the roof lets in precipitation.
Preparing for the repair
Before repairing the roof of a country house, they clean the place where there is damage from dust and debris. It is advisable to wash the roof with water, for which you can use a hose.
After the completion of the cleaning of the roofing and its complete drying, they begin to prepare the mixture for repair (patching the slate), it consists of:
- cement, the brand of which is not less than M300;
- PVA glue;
- asbestos (it is allowed to use either self-grated sheet building material, or buy it ready-made - fluffed). If this component is prepared by hand, you must use a respirator and goggles.
The composition is prepared as follows: 2 parts of cement are mixed with 3 parts of asbestos and poured with a mixture consisting of equal proportions of water and PVA glue. The result should be a solution that has the consistency of thick sour cream. When the mixture is prepared, you can carry out repairs.
How to apply patches
Leaking country houses with a shed roof or a gable roof made of slate begin to be repaired with a primer, for which PVA glue diluted in a ratio of 1: 3 is used. After that, the damage sites are filled with a pre-prepared mixture at least 2 times, while the thickness of the applied layers should exceed 2 millimeters.
Experts advise repairing country houses with a pitched roof or with a different number of slopes when the weather is dry, non-sunny, which provides conditions for the mixture to dry slowly and thus the patch becomes more durable.
A similar method of repairing sheets of slate asbestos-cement roofing can be used on other buildings, such as, for example, a summer cottage with a roof or a garden gazebo. Thanks to the application of patches, the life of the roof is extended by at least 5 years.
