A Japanese-style garden or a spectacular Japanese garden!
Hello dear readers! Despite the fact that garden design is constantly changing, the fashion for the main design trends does not fade away, but only gains momentum in popularity. These really popular designs include a Japanese-style garden. It should be noted that such a stormy demand is explained by the interest of the inhabitants of Russia in Eastern traditions, you must admit that such a peculiarity of style simply cannot go unnoticed. In addition, the Japanese Garden attracts attention with the presence of predominantly natural materials such as stone, wood and bamboo.
It is also worth saying that the Japanese style in landscape design is distinguished by a high degree of thoughtfulness, where literally every meter of the occupied area carries a certain style load, and in fact, is an attempt to combine all the splendor of Japanese nature in one small area. Therefore, often in one area you can observe an imitation of waterfalls, rocks, mountain forests, lakes, dried up or active rivers. And even though such an imitation will be far from genuine landscapes, but on the other hand, a symbolic image created with one's own hand will constantly remind you of the true Japanese nature.
An important rule: if you decide to create a Japanese garden with your own hands, you should be aware that the landscape in question must be in harmony with other architectural structures on the site (house, garage, gazebos, etc.), otherwise instead of a harmonious image, you can get absolute disharmony.
Formation of the Japanese garden.
Gardeners recommend forming a garden plot in such a way that three planes of visual perception are clearly visible: rear, middle and front. Such a setting is done with the aim of effectively presenting the landscape, because the composition arranged in this way will be perfectly viewed from certain points, and as the person moves along the pre-planned trajectory of the site, the landscape will seem to “open up”.
Especially often used is the so-called composition of an unequal triangle, which is traditionally made up of stones, Japanese lanterns, shrubs, herbs or flowers. Moreover, it is better to arrange the "triangle" in such a way that its long side is facing the observer, and the short one is located on the left side.
In addition, the technique of “visual distance” is popular, when large stones are set in the foreground and large-leaved shrubs are planted, stones and medium-sized plants are located in the background, and, accordingly, small stones and flowers should be placed in the third plan.
Plants in the Japanese garden.
Each plant in the garden in question should carry a certain meaning, so their selection should be taken seriously.
Symbolism of some plants:
- Bamboo - stamina;
- Pine - longevity;
- Bindweed - the charm of life;
- Plum tree - spiritual beauty;
- Plum blossoms - courage;
- Blossoming Sakura (cherry) - physical beauty.
The Japanese garden is usually filled with coniferous and evergreen shrubs, in addition, cherry or plum trees, evergreen oaks, Japanese maples, kerrias, pines, bamboo are often planted. Also popular are: aspidistra, camellia, holly, laurel, rhododendron, irises, azalea, lotus, bindweed, wisteria and peonies. But not even all the plants inherent in the true Japanese style will take root in our middle lane, for example, bamboo is unlikely to take root. Of course, some varieties of bamboo can survive a couple of winters, but with the advent of special frosts, they will definitely die.
An alternative to Japanese bamboo.
Since not all plants that successfully exist in Japan will take root in Russia, they have to look for an alternative. And this fully applies to bamboo, it has already been noted above that bamboo does not tolerate the winter period well, but without it, a Japanese-style garden will seem unfinished, so what to do? Just find a replacement… The young black alder 'Imperialis' is an alternative to bamboo. In addition, for bamboo shoots, Sakhalin buckwheat will do. In extreme cases, you can purchase bamboo trunks, fix them in the ground and wrap them around with small-leaved vines.
What to plant in the shady zone?
In the shady zone, you can plant rhododendrons, and it is better to give preference to the Caucasian rhododendron, which sprouts without problems in the semi-shaded zone (its flowering period falls in the middle of summer) and deciduous rhododendron, which blooms in April-May.
Not far from the rhododendrons, it is quite possible to place a Japanese primrose, which will effectively bloom for about 1.5 months. In addition, we must not forget about the shade-loving ferns, the three-parted multi-row will perfectly take root, the scutellum is light and the vesicle is brittle.
What to plant in a sunny area?
It is better to give preference to the dwarf Weymouth pine, as well as the Japanese spirea (blooms in late summer), Ginnala's riverine maple.
In addition, you can sow Siebold's hoof, a bright periwinkle (blooms in spring).
In general, plants should be selected in such a way that the periods of flowering of some plants replace others. With the spring-summer period, I think everything is clear, but in the fall the garden will be transformed by red maple leaves, so maple should be planted. In addition, pine needles will look spectacular.

Stones in the Japanese garden.
A Japanese garden simply cannot do without stone compositions. Moreover, compositions based on the use of stones, turned with water, aged and overgrown with moss, will look most advantageous. Therefore, ordinary river pebbles, sandstone, as well as all kinds of natural slates are ideal.
With the help of stones, you can create small waterfalls, riverbeds, low or high fences, pave paths and build bridges. A favorite design technique is the creation of a “dry stream”, when the bed of an impromptu stream is completely covered with flat, shiny stones, symbolizing water flows. And through such a stream, a bridge made of bamboo, metal, stone or wood may well be thrown. Options for garden bridges can be viewed.
Also, we must not forget about the "carelessly thrown" boulders, it is better to place them somewhere in the center of the garden. In addition, gravel gardens are in high demand, implying a gravel mound distributed in an even layer throughout the site.
Accessories for the Japanese garden.
You can complement the Japanese-style garden with red-painted bridges, stone lanterns with a wide roof, boulders of various sizes, as well as all kinds of elements made of bamboo. Moreover, if you are “fired up” with the idea of \u200b\u200bcreating a Japanese garden, but the rest of the buildings on the site are far from this direction, they can always be supplemented with bamboo elements, and then the incompatibility of images will definitely not be discussed. Bamboo can be used to make fences, screens, used as a finishing material in gazebos, and it can also be used to decorate front doors to a house or garage.
